Librarian, Technical Services

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under limited supervision, develops and maintains the library’s collection including purchasing materials, cataloging and weeding library collection materials, and reviewing donations for inclusion in library collection.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

• Organizes data regarding the library’s holding so items are correctly described and located to provide access; provides an accurate catalog record; determines the correct location of items within the collection.
• Catalogs library materials by adding items to bibliographic records already in the countrywide library database; searches the system for matching records; determines a correct match and attaches a barcode to the item; enters data about the item in the holding record.
• Locates and downloads records for items not already in the countywide library database from other bibliographic databases; adds to holdings as above.
• Creates original bibliographic records following established national and international guidelines; inputs data describing the item into the countywide library database following national standards for format and punctuation; verifies correct call number and subject headings using the Library of Congress rules and approved subject headings; adds to holdings as above.
• Maintains records of the library’s holdings in the countywide library database; corrects or deletes item records as needed.
• Performs collection development by determining materials that are out of date and deleting them; identifies items patrons request and acquires them; determines the correct location for materials and makes the necessary changes.
• Purchases all new and replacement materials for library collection including books (adult through child), audiobooks and Playaways, videos, e-books, e-audiobooks, periodicals and newspaper subscriptions; purchases and renews data services for Wi-Fi hotspots; purchases all library supplies.
• Trains and oversees a team of volunteers to assist with cataloging tasks that would otherwise be performed by a team of staff catalogers; including adding library holdings to existing records, researching items for the collection and processing materials as needed.
• Oversees and/or processes fulfillment of inter-library loan requests through WorldCat mailing and receiving requested materials to libraries throughout the country.
• Oversees and/or mends all library materials as needed including books, discs, etc. using equipment such as Coverbind and disc repair machines.
• Assists at the Circulation Desk as needed; checks materials in and out to patrons; answers patron requests; places patron holds; answers phone renewals and reference questions; processes library card applications; processes outdoor and internal book drops; files and shelves books and videos; manages money for library fines and ongoing library book sales.
• Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values and goals of the Town by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
• Supports the relationship between the Town and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with residents, visitors and Town staff; enthusiastically promotes the Town’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred but not required) and two years of cataloging experience in a public or academic library. An equivalent or similar combination of education and experience will be considered.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Possession of a valid State of Arizona driver’s license.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: 

• Work is performed in a traditional office environment. May be required to perform a full range of motion with lifting and/or carrying supplies, materials, equipment and/or items weighing up to 40 pounds. Requires extensive data entry activities that require repetitive motion and prolonged sitting.
