    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The library media specialist is responsible to the building Principal for: planning instructional lessons that meet the needs, interests and abilities of students as well as address state standards; creating an environment that is conducive to learning; and employing effective instructional strategies. In addition the library media specialist is also responsible for providing an environment that fosters an appreciation of literature and literature sharing with students as well as assisting teachers with literature to support the K-5 Curriculum.

     

    REPORTS TO: Principal and Assistant Principal(s)

     

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

     
    1. Applicants must hold an appropriate State of Illinois (PEL) Professional Educator License with Library Media Specialist Endorsement.

    2. Previous experience as a media specialist or classroom teacher preferred.

    3. Ability to provide instructional support in the areas of instructional technology, selection and implementation of materials needed for various study programs.

    4. Ability to maintain an accurate inventory of all media and library materials.

    5. Knowledge of staff development and program improvement activities.

    6. Ability to work closely with parents, teachers, and supervisors to establish effective communication.

    7. Demonstrated knowledge of technology use and integration including digital literacy.

    8. Demonstrated expertise in pedagogy of teaching their subject area.

    9. Deep knowledge of content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment driven instruction.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

     
    1. Maintain and enrich their expertise in computer science/digital literacy.

    2. Develop lesson plans that ensure the attainment of specific learning standards.

    3. Coordinate lesson plans with teachers to maximize possibilities for integrated, multi-disciplinary teaching.

    4. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.

    5. Knowledge and ability to teach information and technology literacy needed for independent learning. 

    6. Align media and  computer literacy programs and services with the school curriculum which includes collaborating with teachers to integrate, coordinate, and facilitate the use of instructional technology across all curriculum areas.

    7. Identify, evaluate, and manage electronic learning resources according to established criteria to support curricular needs of students and staff.

    8. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.

    9. Works with students and others to prepare materials for inclusion in literary publications, contests, etc.

    10. Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.

    11. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.

    12. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

    13. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

    14. Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

    15. Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.

    16. Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.

    17. Maintain professional attitudes, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate to students and employees and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the school’s educational philosophy.

    18. Perform other duties as assigned by administrators.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  180 day work calendar.  Salary and benefits to be established by the Board of Education.

     

    EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated by the administrator and/or supervisor

     

    Physical Demands: Ordinary ambulatory ability to retrieve work materials, intermittent walking, standing, stooping, and carrying and lifting of light weight materials; requires visual acuity sufficient to recognize people, words, and numbers; requires hand-eye-arm and finger dexterity to use a personal computer keyboard, ten-key, and other common office equipment; requires speaking and hearing ability sufficient to hear over phone and carry on routine conversations. 

     

    Work Environment: Work is performed on school grounds with minimal exposure to health and safety considerations.
