Description


Under limited supervision serves as head of children’s services; is responsible and oversees the daily activities of this department.  Develops, plans, and implements services for children through 6th grade, including collection development, programming, and community outreach. Serves as a member of the library’s management team. Supervises Children’s staff.  Evenings and weekends required. Reports to a certified Librarian III or higher.

  • Maintains awareness of current library issues and trends by reading professional and related literature and attending workshops, conferences and courses.
  • Knowledge of library reference materials and tools of research.
  • Provides reference services to individuals of all age groups
  • Provides classes to the community
  • Plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate library staff engaged in a variety of library operations.
  • Provides staff development and training of supervised professionals, para-professionals, clerical, technical and promotional services.
  • Assists the public with the continuous familiarization of library resources and digital media.
  • Promoted educational and digital services in the library and the community.
  • Creates digital graphics in the promotion of library programming.
  • Maintains websites and social media in the promotion of library programming and cultural events.
  •  Creates educational programming for a diverse community with a wide range of needs from toddlers to seniors
  • Professional library work involving a wide range of library operations
  • Supervision of lower staff
  • Analyzes collection development needs
  • Ability to reconfigure spaces in order to create various environment based on programming needs.
  • Performs related lower level work as required.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s in Education or Media Specialist, Academic Research, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Graduate degree from ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS program or related program required.
  • Three years or more experience in public library services.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with satisfactory driving record held throughout employment.

  • Adult Services and programming experience or digital archival experience.
  • Supervises part-time employees and volunteers involved in delivery of library services.
  • Knowledge of library reference materials and tools of research.
  • Knowledge of library automation systems and applications.
  • Knowledge of cataloging principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and techniques.
  • Ability to analyze operational problems and make recommendations for their solutions.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of professional and para-professional and support staff.
  • Ability to interpret library policies, objectives and services to the public and staff.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply technical library theory.
  • Ability to perform effective library reference, reader’s advisory duties and other professional level library work.
  • Ability to develop innovative programs for the library and its customers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with library patrons, employees and supervisors.
  • Ability to maintain fiscal and administrative records.
  • Ability to effectively express ideas and information, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to prepare written reports.
