POSITION TITLE: Librarian I-Senior Services


The  Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic  Librarian I to provide Senior Services as a part of the HMCPL Outreach Services Department. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the Outreach Services department  and for providing library services and resources to seniors throughout the community, including in assisted living and retirement facilities.  The ideal candidate will be  well-organized with strong customer service skills, enthusiastic about working  with seniors, passionate about libraries and excited to connect the community with resources, services, and  events to engage and encourage creativity, and lifelong learning.

HOURS AND COMPENSATION:  This  is a full-time, 30 hour a week position with a pay rate of $18.50 an  hour.  Benefits offered include health insurance, dental insurance,  vision insurance, life insurance, long-term and short-term disability, and MPP and 457(b) retirement plan options.   General schedule is Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend and evening events as needed.  


GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  This is professional work providing library services to patrons who reside in retirement, nursing, and/or assisted living facilities throughout Madison County. Work involves responsibility for library materials held in deposits at retirement, nursing, and assisted living facilities throughout Madison County, including record keeping, updating collections with new materials, inventory, and maintaining reports and statistics relating to use of library materials at those facilities. Work also involves acting as support staff for the Outreach Department. This position is classified as Non-exempt for the purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the immediate supervisor as determined by the Executive Director.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Acts as a team member in fulfilling the Library's Mission Statement: "This is the public's library. We empower individuals to create their own futures, explore the universe of ideas, and connect with our community and the world."

Acts as an expert for senior community members using the library's resources and materials.  Communicates with nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and retirement communities throughout the county to ensure that on site library collections are patron-oriented and well maintained; rotates and updates collections as needed.  Answers inquiries from library staff and patrons regarding services and resources for senior community members; May plan and conduct library tours, senior story hours, book clubs, senior-focused programs, and community outreach.  Collects, delivers, loads, unloads, carries and transports library materials to various locations throughout Madison County using a large  utility vehicle on a routine basis.   May act as a Library representative to professional, private, and civic organizations as well as the general public as needed.  Participates in system-wide committees, boards, projects, meetings, and initiatives as needed.


OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:  Participates in special projects and performs additional duties as required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, and lifting/carrying items generally not exceeding 40 pounds. Must possess the mobility to carry supplies and deliveries over uneven terrain. Must possess the vision required to read printed materials and a computer screen. Must possess the ability to hear and speak both in person and over the telephone.

Physical dexterity is required including hand-to-eye coordination and manipulative skills congruent with the operation of machines, carts, and tools. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer. Work requires sitting for periods of time in a confined vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of office environments. Involves driving the Library vehicles outside on a daily basis traveling  from the Downtown Library to the various other locations which may involve various and unpredictable driving conditions which are affected by weather, other drivers, potential traffic hazards and changing road conditions. Therefore, the employee will be exposed to outdoor conditions at times and will be enclosed in a vehicle.The employee will interact with other staff members and members of the public regularly. The employee may interact with upset staff and/or members of the public.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge of basic computer skills; knowledge of basic math skills; ability to operate computer and library systems including telephone, tablets, and various devices; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions including posted schedules; ability to work both independently and as a member of a team; ability to analyze and solve major problems; competence in oral and written communications; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, corporate representatives, officials of other agencies, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.


EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited college or university; or a high school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency plus one (1) or more years additional experience in a library or customer service based role; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides a demonstrated potential for performing the above listed duties of the position is required. Possession of a clean driving record including no accidents or  violations in the past 3 years. Ability to pass a criminal background check.
