Summary

The Librarian for Archives and Technical Services is responsible for materials processing in both the SCC archives and Boyd Library technical services. Primary functions include cataloging and classification of library and archival materials, providing reference assistance to library users, scheduling classroom visits by faculty request for bibliographic instruction, and collaboration with faculty and librarians through intensive review process to identify materials for acquisition, weeding and discard.

Essential Functions

  • Provide in-person and virtual reference assistance to all users seeking various types of library resources to support research activities.
  • Coordinate the daily taskings of technical services areas, to include copy cataloging, technical processing of new and weeded print materials and performance evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Solicit collection development recommendations from faculty through intensive review and other engagement activities. Prioritize acquisition requests for library materials to support diverse curriculum offerings.
  • Collaborate with librarians to identify materials for acquisition, weeding and discard.
  • Schedule and prepare library instruction sessions as requested by faculty, with emphasis on particular assignment and course requirements.
  • Ensure the physical and digital college archive collection remains within the scope of institutional history while maintaining adequate access to all users.
  • Assist interested faculty with integration of college archival materials into course assignments and provide support for research projects.
  • Collaborate with the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center (NCDHC) for scanning support and upload of locally produced digital objects for public accessibility through its online publishing program.
  • Maintain and refine established finding aids and digital collections to enhance access to tangible archival resources.
  • Enhance knowledge of technical services and archival best practices and upgrade skill set through professional development opportunities and required training.
  • Demonstrate persistent helpfulness in service to student, faculty, staff and community patron customers.

Qualifications

  • Position requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science/Library Information Science from a university accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Possess working knowledge of Library Management Systems and electronic databases.
  • Functional knowledge of technical services and reference.
  • Knowledge of basic library cataloging and classification.
  • Academic concentration in Archives with intern hours a plus.
  • Familiarity with digital file formats for preservation and online publication.
  • Qualified candidate should possess strong customer service background that embodies the SCC core value of helpfulness.
