Description

The Arlington County Public Library System is seeking a Detention Center Librarian to provide services, resources, and information for incarcerated individuals in the County jail. The employee will work closely with Arlington Public Library and the Arlington County Detention Facility to develop and deliver programs and services to meet the educational, social, and recreational needs of this specific population.



Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the library in the Arlington County Detention Center to include responding to inmate inquiries, assessing needs and interests of inmates to determine appropriate resources, recommending materials, conducting database searches, and assisting customers in finding materials both onsite and remotely;
  • Coordinating and maintaining partnerships with the Sheriff's office to support library operations and programs;
  • Working with community partners to design, develop, and implement re-entry programming, including resume building, job searching, and workforce development programs;
  • Maintaining a legal collection incorporating federal, state, and local litigation materials;
  • Providing legal research assistance to inmates;
  • Participating in the system-wide Adult Services Team and other teams as assigned; and
  • Participating in the maintenance of the detention center library collection.

 

The ideal candidate for this job will be adult and customer service-oriented, energetic, enthusiastic, empathetic, and tech-savvy. Those with bilingual in English/Spanish language skills are encouraged to apply.



Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Masters' Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university; and
  • Up to three years of experience serving in a Librarian role which includes at least one year in adult librarian services and/or services to inmates. 
  • As this is a broadband class, qualifications may be reduced to hire at the entry (1 year) or journey (2 years) level with a similar reduction in the specialty area.

 

Desirables: Preference will be given to candidates with graduate or undergraduate course work in law or experience working in the legal field or in a law library and one or more of the following:
 

  • Developing new and supporting existing partnerships with non-library organizations;
  • Conducting programs for adults, especially patrons from underserved communities, including the incarcerated and/or those with special needs;
  • Experience researching and writing grants; and/or
  • Working with limited English-speaking adults and families.

 

Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment and maintain, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record. 

Must be able to push heavy book carts, lift 25 pounds, and stand for extended periods of time. 

 

Additional Information

Work hours: Part-time, 30 hours per week. Current vacancy is at the Arlington County Detention Facility library. Work hours and assignments may change over time as the needs of the organization requires.
 
Please note locations of work: There will be a general requirement of working at the Detention Center library and the Courthouse branch in a librarian role, including collection maintenance and development of adult programming; and operational duties, such as answering phones and working the service desk.
