 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The ASCPL is hiring a Librarian (Collection Development) to work on-site at Main Library to support our Mission Statement to provide resources for learning and leisure, information services, meeting spaces, and programs for all ages that support, improve, and enrich individual, family, and community life.  The Librarian (Collection Development) works 37.5 hours and: 

  • Participates in general collection building with the Collection Development Coordinator and other librarians in a team environment. 
  • Selects appropriate Library materials in assigned areas in accordance with the Collection Development policies, using funds allocated by Collection Development Coordinator.
  • Identifies materials for purchase.  Reviews advertisements and publisher/vendor catalogs.  Monitors best-seller lists.  Assesses customer requests and employee suggestions.
  • Analyzes statistical data using the Library’s tools and technology.
  • Maintains awareness of local and general interests, events, and trends, and anticipates demand for materials. 
  • Visits branches and agencies regularly and evaluates collections to determine specific needs of the agency or branch. 
  • Conducts collection analyses for branches, divisions, and the system as a whole to assess collection strengths and weaknesses and to develop plans for collection remediation.
  • Curates lists and promotes the collection in a variety of formats.
  • Serves as a system-wide expert in specific collection areas and formats.
  • Assists customers at public service desks as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Required: A Master of Library and Information Science degree.*  Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science.  Knowledge of library services and operations.  Knowledge of customer interests related to Library materials, programs, and services.  Knowledge of best practices in collection development that fosters balanced, diverse, and inclusive collections, proper budgetary management, and related topics.  Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom as they apply to public libraries.  Skill in customer service.  Ability to generate reporting using the Library’s Integrated Library System and other platforms to analyze collection usage.  Ability to lift light objects (less than 25 pounds) and carry them short distances (50 feet or less).  Valid driver's license, automobile insurance, and reliable personal transportation.  Ability to pass background, motor vehicle records, and education verification checks.

 Preferred:  2 or more years of relevant experience. Ohio Public Librarian Certification.

* Applicants within 7 credit hours or less toward completion of an M.L.I.S. degree will also be considered under certain conditions.  Individuals hired under these conditions will begin as a Public Service Assistant lll, and upon confirmation of completion of the M.L.I.S. degree will be moved to Librarian.
