Job Description Summary
The Law Library Associate position is responsible for assisting customers of the Law Library and Resource Center, including members of the public, attorneys, judges, and judicial staff, in the use of library resources that facilitate participation in court proceedings and the justice system.
This is a court classified position that reports to the Director, Law Library. The incumbent works under general supervision and has no supervisory responsibilities.
Hiring Range: $20.83 - $22.65

Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in library science, law or paralegal studies, or a related field OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/ or education approved by Human Resources.
Preference may be given to candidates who speak Spanish fluently, have knowledge of legal research and terminology and/or work experience in a legal or library setting.

Essential Duties & Functions:
- Manages the resource center’s inventory of court forms and informational packets for self-represented litigants.
- Explains to people who are representing themselves in court cases how they can locate and use Law Library and Resource Center services, information and equipment including court legal forms, websites, legal electronic databases, print materials, and photocopier/printers.
- Maintains a cash fund and uses a cash register for selling forms and giving change for a public use copy machine, secures cash at closing, and prepares and submits deposits to the treasurer's office.
- Trains staff on cash register and financial management procedures and resolves problems related to cash handling procedures and equipment.
- Serves as a tech liaison, investigating and resolving operational and technical issues with point of sale and office equipment, in collaboration with vendors and other court departments such as Information Technology Services Division and Finance.
- Maintains the resource center’s display of agency brochures and handouts to inform customers about relevant community agencies and resources.
- Opens and/or closes the Law Library and Resource Center following established guidelines.
- Provides information on available research materials such as laws, regulations, cases, and legal articles.
- Assists the Director, Law Library in the distribution of judicial library materials.
- Assists in fulfilling requests from incarcerated individuals for court forms, and legal research resources.
- Assists in researching and responding to complex and technical reference questions.
- Makes recommendations of new title purchases to the Director, Law Library.
Knowledge of:
- Must have the knowledge of standard library acquisitions policies and procedures, library data systems, and the principles of cataloging.
- Must have the knowledge of Library of Congress classification and subject headings, the use of standard serials indexes and resources, library records keeping and filing, library collection, and the principles of reference services.
- Must have extensive knowledge of and recent experience with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, and PowerPoint.
Skills:
- Must have skills in the use of on-line databases, preferably Westlaw, Hein Online, government and legal information sources, and integrated library systems.
- Must have the skills to operate office equipment such as photocopiers and cash registers.
- Must have strong customer service skills and be able to establish positive and effective working relationships with staff.
- Must have the ability to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing with a diverse spectrum of customers.
