The Information Services Librarian/Associate position at Salina Public Library provides high-quality, friendly and professional service. This position serves primarily adult library patrons by providing reference services, assisting with collection development, and facilitating programs and outreach. To be a part of our Library team, a positive attitude, flexibility and willingness to work well with everyone is required.


Hours/Schedule:

Full Time - 40 hours per week

Mostly M-F, 8:30-5:30

With 1-2 evenings per month for programs, and several weekend days per year for special events. Schedules are adjusted as needed for the Library and may include an occasional extra evening or weekend shift as needed to cover staffing shortages.


Starting Pay: $52,644.80/year or $54,995.20/year dependent on education and experience


Benefits: 

  • 40 hours paid time off after 6 months of service; 80 hours (2 weeks) after 1 year; 120 hours (3 weeks) after 5 years; 160 hours (4 weeks) after 10 years

Minimum Education: MLS/MLIS Preferred / Bachelor's Degree Required

Work Experience: Library Experience Preferred


Supervisory Experience: Not Required


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Public Services & Reference
    • Support the library’s mission and provide exceptional customer service, whether to patrons or co-workers.
    • Provide excellent customer service in person, by phone, mail, and via digital platforms.
    • Answer reference and reader’s advisory questions using print, digital databases, and microfilm.
    • Assist patrons with basic computer skills and downloadable digital resources.
    • Maintain a general knowledge of programs and services offered by the wider library.
    • Communicate clearly, accurately and in a timely manner with a diverse set of patrons and co-workers.
    • Be willing to help in any area of the library as needed. 
    • Be able to enforce library policy and follow procedure in a variety of situations, including high-stress or confrontational interactions.
    • Navigate and use the library catalog and patron accounts in-depth.
    • Redirect inquiries and collaborate across departments to ensure patron needs are met.
    • Serve as a proctor for online classes.

    Collection Development
    • Participate in adult collection development including selection, weeding, and ordering.
    • Use authoritative review tools and standards for collection curation.
    • Monitor budgets for assigned collection areas.
    • Create thematic displays and booklists that reflect community interests and trends.
    • Manage and promote digital resources.

    Programs & Outreach
    • Develop and deliver programs for adults (in-person, virtual, print, and digital formats).
    • Plan and conduct outreach services at locations such as:
      • Local jail
      • Community resource center
      • Retirement communities
      • Memory care groups
      • Book groups and read-aloud sessions
    • Lead crafts, professional development sessions, and community events.

    Community Engagement & Partnerships
    • Build relationships with community organizations, businesses, and service providers.
    • Identify and respond to community needs through programs and resources.

    Professional Growth & Team Collaboration
    • Demonstrate professional behavior and comply with library policies and procedures, including adhering to library dress code.
    • Stay current on library trends, popular culture, and emerging technologies through professional development.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues on projects and service initiatives.
    • Prepare for and participate in staff and project team meetings.
    • Demonstrate critical thinking, reliability, and adaptability in a dynamic environment.

    Administrative & Operational Duties
    • Be reliable. Work scheduled hours, show up ready to work on time and use breaks appropriately.
    • Help to maintain organized and tidy library spaces.
    • Assist with the organization of archival materials.
    • Assist with additions and upkeep of digital archive.
    • Conduct general clerical tasks and comply with all library policies and procedures.
    • Maintain professionalism under stress and handle situations with tact and diplomacy.
    • Undergeneral guidance, work honestly and independently and manage multiple tasks with integrity and attention to detail.
    • Perform other duties as assigned, including special projects and interdepartmental support.

    REQUIREMENTS
    • Valid Driver’s License.
    • Pre-employment drug screen.  (post-employment drug screen may also take place)
    • Pre-employment background check. 
    • Basic keyboarding skills.
    • The ability to work with a variety of technology equipment and applications. Applications include, but not limited to documents, sheets, internet browsers, email, and Google Drive.
    • Demonstrate professional behavior and wear professional clothing in adherence to the dress code policy.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Light to moderate physical work. 
    • Lifting, carrying and pushing up to 40 pounds with or without assistance.
    • Frequent lifting, carrying, standing, walking, bending, climbing stairs, twisting, reaching, pulling and pushing. 
    • Speech and hearing abilities to maintain communication with patrons and co-workers.  
    • Vision to read and interpret reports, written documents and technology communications. 
    • Work is primarily indoors, with some outdoor work for book drop pickups and other Library event assistance.
