Prescott Memorial Library invites applicants for the position of Government Documents / Applied and Natural Sciences Librarian.

This Librarian serves as a regional depository coordinator who is responsible for acquiring, organizing, and preserving a wide range of government publications, as well as facilitating access to them and performing information services. Providing leadership for the Government Documents Department, this Librarian manages the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) at Louisiana Tech University, overseeing eleven selective depository libraries across the state, and also manages the historical Louisiana Public Documents Depository. Responsibilities of the position include attending national and state meetings and conferences to maintain awareness of current trends emerging in government publications. This Librarian also works closely with other departments to support the Library’s mission.

This Librarian is also one of Prescott Memorial Library’s liaison librarians who serve each of Louisiana Tech University’s five colleges. This Librarian builds working relationships, communicates and collaborates with administrators, faculty, and students in the College of Applied and Natural Sciences to meet their curricular, research, and accreditation needs. This Librarian selects and deselects information resources in Agriculture and Forestry, Biological Sciences, Health Informatics and Information Management, Human Ecology, and Nursing with responsibility for developing and managing these collections in consultation with the College’s administrators and faculty. This Librarian provides research consultation, subject-specific information services, and course-related instruction to students and faculty in these academic departments. As a member of the Research Services Team, this Librarian also provides general information services to all Library users.

This is a 12-month tenure-track faculty department head appointment at a rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

As coordinator of the Regional Federal Depository, this Librarian

  • Manages Louisiana Tech University’s participation in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), the U.S. Map Depository, the FEMA Center of Excellence, as well as the Historical Louisiana Public Documents Depository.

  • Supervises technical processing for government documents in conjunction with the Cataloger/Systems Administrator/Electronic Resources Librarian.

  • Supervises collection maintenance, establishing and implementing policies and procedures.

  • Oversees development and maintenance of the Library’s Government Documents Department Web pages.  

  • Supervises classified employees.  

  • Oversees Louisiana’s participation in the Regional Federal Depository Library Program in collaboration with the Depository Coordinator at Louisiana State University.   

  • Serves as a liaison between the selectives in Louisiana and the Government Publishing Office in Washington DC.

  • Provides training on processes and procedures to the selectives.

  • Participates in national task forces, committees, and other bodies related to federal government information.

  • Serves as Louisiana Tech’s liaison to the Louisiana State Library.

  • Participates in Research Services, providing information services for Government Documents on the phone, in-person and online.

  • Promotes collections through physical and online exhibitions, publications, presentations, and other outreach activities.

  • Assists in planning future accommodations of government documents including preservation and reconfiguring physical space.

As liaison to the College of Applied and Natural Sciences, this Librarian 

  • Selects and deselects information resources appropriate to meet curricular and research needs in consultation with College of Applied and Natural Sciences faculty.

  • Provides research consultation and subject-specific information services to students and faculty in the College of Applied and Natural Sciences. Also provides general information services to all Library users. 

  • Designs, develops, and delivers course-related instruction in-person or virtually. 

  • Meets tenure requirements of research and scholarship as well as service to the University, the Library, and the profession. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.

  • Undergraduate degree or relevant experience in Agriculture and Forestry, Biological Sciences, Health Informatics and Information Management, Human Ecology, or Nursing. 

  • At least one to two years of relevant work experience in an academic or research library. 

  • Experience working with Government Documents.

  • Supervisory and/or management experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in public services, providing user-centered information services and/or instruction in an academic or research library. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team within a culturally diverse user community of students, faculty and staff.

  • Effective organizational and time management skills in order to perform tasks and to meet deadlines.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Graduate degree in Agriculture and Forestry, Biological Sciences, Health Informatics and Information Management, Human Ecology, or Nursing. 

  • More than two years of relevant work experience in an academic or research library. 

  • Experience managing a Government Documents collection.

  • Knowledge of library classification systems and standard cataloging rules.

  • Experience developing and delivering course-related instruction in both in-person and virtual environments.

ABOUT PRESCOTT MEMORIAL LIBRARY: Prescott Memorial Library provides a wide variety of physical and digital information resources and services. Centrally located on campus, the Library occupies nine floors of Wyly Tower which is connected to its original three story building. Collections total 3.9 million items, including 2,000 serials and 40,000 maps. A Regional Federal Depository Library, Prescott Memorial Library is also a historical depository for Louisiana state documents. Special Collections, Manuscripts, and Archives on the fourth floor preserves rare books, manuscripts, maps and other materials, including collections documenting the history of Louisiana Tech University and the region.

Prescott Memorial Library is a member of LOUIS, the consortium of public and private college and university libraries in Louisiana.
