VAUGHN HISTORY and MISSION

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The School Librarian (Enrichment Assistant) supports the daily operations of the school library, ensuring that students and staff have access to essential resources that promote literacy and learning. This role involves managing library materials, assisting students in book selection, supporting teachers with instructional resources, and maintaining an organized and welcoming library environment. The School Librarian (Enrichment Assistant) collaborates with educators to align library resources with curriculum needs, promotes reading initiatives, and facilitates research skill workshops. Additionally, the position requires strong organizational skills, proficiency in library and office technology, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Presents at faculty meetings, parent meetings, and school board meetings
• Function independently, able to work as a self-starter
• Arranges for scheduling of the library to provide student accessibility to staff and resources at point of need.
• Preview/select/purchase new books for curricular needs as well as independent reading program; provides lexile and other information for student selection of books
• Meets with Grade-Level /Department Level Teams as an instructional partner to plan and implement meaningful experience that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning (Million Words Campaign, SRC, Donalyn Miller Model)
• Teach research skills workshops
• Aligning library resources with grade level instructional themes
• Support teacher’s needs with references and instructional materials
• Informational Specialist
• Enter/scan new materials in computer
• Utilize school library computer program
• Direct and conduct materials inventory (when required)
• Screen, order, process label, and organize books
• Maintain library facilities and materials in an orderly matter (i.e., filing books, periodical, and other learning resources)
• Recovering lost and overdue materials
• Utilize technology-based references
• Assist students in the selection of books and other learning resources
• Types book cards, book pockets, and labels as needed

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma, General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalent education required
• At least six months of office and/or library experience.
• Possess a work ethic and personal belief system that aligns with the mission and vision of Vaughn Next Century Learning Center
• Team player with a demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain effective and cooperative professional relationships.
• Strong organizational skills; a self-starter who can prioritize and multi-task
• Excellent verbal/written communication, organization, and time management skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office365 applications, Microsoft Word, Excel and online data input software.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
• Constantly operate a computer and other office equipment involving repetitive arm and hand movement
• Lift up to 15 lbs.
• Bending, Standing, and walking for extended periods of time.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:

• $19.00 - $23.00/hr. (Non-Degree Track), $26.00 - $30.00/hr. (Bachelor’s Degree Track), $31.00 - $36.00/hr (Master’s Degree/Credential Track)
• 195 days of work per year

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Upon receiving an offer of employment:

• Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ)
• Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
• Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
