PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENINGS: Brenau University will conduct criminal background checks on all persons being considered for initial employment. In some circumstances, an FBI fingerprint report may be necessary to satisfy the requirement. Once employed, employees must hold and continue to maintain a favorable criminal history background. Random background checks are performed. Credit checks may be performed on candidates/employees who are selected for a position that regularly engages in handling credit cards or other company monies. A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) may be performed during the hiring process, or as part of a random check. MVR checks are required to meet insurance requirements for those employees operating a university vehicle or participating in any driving activity on behalf of Brenau University, (including operating a golf cart, rented vehicle or one’s personal vehicle). Employees who travel must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid Georgia driver’s license, and good driving record. All employees who operate university vehicles, who are employed in a sensitive position, or who travel regularly as part of their job responsibilities may be subject to post-hire drug screening and random drug-screening. All employees are subject to reasonable suspicion drug screening..

Position Summary: A full-time position aligned with the mission and values of the Brenau Trustee Library and the University, the evening Resource Sharing & Reference Librarian manages our resource sharing program and provides evening reference services for students as needed. Effective resource sharing directly impacts student success and persistence by strengthening faculty, graduate, and undergraduate research with electronic and print resources borrowed from other libraries. Resource sharing is a core service requiring subject expertise, technical capabilities, and policy/law interpretation. Its scope entails collaboration with other libraries, discovery tools, collection management, bibliographic description, document delivery, and reciprocal borrowing and lending.

Minimum Requirements:

  • MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Flexibility and initiative to work in a dynamic small library environment with a strong student-centric service orientation
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment, be self-motivated, and prioritize work
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing
  • Commitment to professional development and university service 

Responsibilities:

Subject Expertise: 

  • knowledge of and experience with resource sharing tools and best practices.
  • locating and effectively searching bibliographic tools including union catalogs, repositories, open access collections, archival resources, databases, and journal collections, both U.S.-based and abroad, for the requested materials. 
  • providing items to students and faculty as quickly as possible.
  • exploring and implementing innovations in the field.
  • rapidly responding to lending and borrowing requests.
  • monitoring borrowed items to ensure their timely, undamaged return.
  • knowledge of WMS or other library services platforms and their discovery systems. 

Policy & Law Compliance: Protect Brenau and the rights of intellectual property owners when borrowing or lending by

  • having knowledge of copyright application to interlibrary services and document delivery operations.
  • complying with Trustee Library resource sharing policies.
  • periodically reviewing and updating library resource sharing policies.
  • publishing library resource sharing policies for borrowing libraries.
  • maintaining appropriate records of activity to demonstrate compliance. 

Collaboration: 

  • representing the Trustee Library on the ARCHE ILL-ILU decision-making committee, at continuing education events, and on national listservs.
  • collaborating with Collection Development, identifies needed serials based on ILL demand.
  • collaborating with Technical Services to adjust WorldCat holdings as needed.

Reference & Supervision: 

  • providing evening reference and bibliographic instruction as needed.
  • supervising the activities of evening shift student employees, Monday through Thursday.
  • supervising the activities of 1 resource sharing student employee.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibilities required. 

Work Hours & Schedule: 
Full-time. 37.5 hours per week.  Generally, an evening shift from 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Hours may be extended to meet the needs of the department.  

Campus Designation:
Gainesville Historic Campus/ on-ground position 

Environmental and Working Conditions/ Physical Demands and Aptitudes:
Mostly Sedentary work. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment related to teaching. Prolonged periods sitting and standing. worker is required to have close visual acuity to grade papers, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Must have the ability to travel short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials. Exerting up to 15 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Some repetitive motion.
