    NATURE OF POSITION: Supervise and manage the school library. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information. Serve as teacher, resource expert, and curriculum advisor to involve the library in the instructional programs of the school.

    REPORTING FUNCTION: Reports directly to Principal

    JOB DESCRIPTION - Duties include the following:

    Program Management:
    1. Develop and instill a love of reading in the students and staff
    2. Develop a print and non-print collection that meets the needs of the curriculum and the leisure interest of the students and staff.
      1. Develop a selection policy with a process for challenged books
      2. Keep apprised of new resources via journals, sales representatives, catalogs, mailings, etc.
      3. Solicit recommendations of resources from teachers and students
    3. Coordinate the annual book fair(s) or other library fund raisers.
    4. Maintain a print and non-print collection that meets the needs of the curriculum and the leisure interest of the students and teachers.
      1. Catalog and process print and non-print materials for the collection
      2. Maintain the cataloging database (or card catalog)
      3. Order supplies necessary for processing and maintaining print and non-print collections
      4. Regularly weed the print and non-print collections
      5. Maintain inventories for all print and audio-visual hardware and software items within the school        
    5. Maintain the physical order of the library
      1. Regular housekeeping duties
      2. Shelve books / read shelves
      3. Prepare the library for non-library functions
      4. Maintain a schedule for library use by teachers/classes
      5. Prepare displays, bulletin boards, etc.
      6. Order/supply light bulbs, batteries, etc. for audio-visual hardware; provide maintenance and repair services for equipment
    6. Curriculum development
      1. Collaborate with teachers on research projects
      2. Be a reading/resource advisor for students and faculty  
      3. Provide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability and utilization of resources
    7. Collection/usage statistics
      1. Maintain the circulation database, track circulation statistics
      2. Track overdue books / send notices / collect fines
      3. Send bills for lost or damaged materials
      4. Maintain a daily attendance/usage log    
      5. Complete an annual inventory for the library print collection
    8. Teaching duties
      1. Story time or book/story related activities for class visits
      2. Work with content area teachers for library skills instruction
      3. Instruct students on a one-on-one or small group basis as needed
      4. Present information on new resources and reinforce library skills to classes, teachers or individual students
    9. Train and supervise aides and volunteers.
    10. Evaluate the library program on a regular basis and implement changes based on findings.
    11. Other Duties as assigned
     
    Student Management:
    1. Create a library environment that is conducive to learning
    2. Supervise students using the library; administer discipline in accordance with the school policies
    3. Interact with students to promote positive attitudes toward the school library and reading
     
    School Relations:
    1. Present a positive role model that supports the philosophy/mission of the school
    2. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with administration and faculty/staff
    3. Comply with all school policies
    4. Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities
    5. Articulate the library’s mission and goals to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission
    6. Communicate with parents as necessary
     
    Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise volunteers.

    Education/Certification:
    • Minimum - Associate’s degree
    • Preferred - A Bachelor of Science in Library and Information Science from an accredited program, concentration in school library media preferred
    • Experience with automated circulation/catalog systems and electronic databases
    • Valid PA librarian or learning resources specialist certificate or endorsement preferred
     
    EXPERIENCE: Preferably 1 or more years of experience as a school librarian, or other relevant experience and knowledge including technical library skills, knowledge in classroom management, and experience working with children.
     
    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Oral and written communication, interpersonal, public relations, organizational and classroom management skills. Basic knowledge of library database and library database language. Knowledge of instructional design for lesson building. Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, E-mail and Internet applications. Operating knowledge of audio visual and sound equipment; office equipment such as copier and laminator; and classroom equipment such as VCR, slide projector, DVD player and laser disk projector.

    SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: Directly supervises library volunteers in the school library. Spends less than 50% of time conducting supervisory responsibilities. Acts as a resource for individuals throughout the school by assisting with locating materials and by assisting with library and classroom equipment.

    JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is primarily self-directed with duties assigned by the building Principal. This position requires application of library management, instructional/lesson design and student management knowledge to review and purchase appropriate materials, develop age-appropriate lessons and manage student behavior and discipline independent of a classroom teacher. Decision making requires collaboration with Principal and teachers.

    DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Work duties are varied and require use and occasional modification of general guidelines. Requires judgment to produce practical courses of action involving corrections or adjustments within the established procedures. Choices fall within the range of specified, acceptable standards, alternatives and practices. The job tasks have operational steps that have to be carried out and the employee decides how and when these steps are to be completed.

    SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Medium exposure to self to repetitive motion injuries due to keyboarding. Low exposure to self to bruises and cuts due to typical library/office accidents.     PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

    MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, synthesize, use interpersonal skills and collaborate. The employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, coordinate, instruct, compute, compile and negotiate. The employee is occasionally required to copy.
