The Elementary School Librarian is responsible for managing the school library, providing age-appropriate library instruction, fostering a love of reading, supporting curriculum goals, and ensuring students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.
Manage and maintain the libraryβs physical and digital resources, including cataloging, circulation, inventory, and weeding.
Teach library/media skills, including information literacy, research techniques, and responsible digital citizenship.
Collaborate with teachers to support literacy development and integrate library resources into classroom instruction.
Promote reading through book talks, reading programs, author visits, and other literacy events.
Select and order books, periodicals, and digital resources aligned with curriculum and student interests.
Provide guidance and supervision to students using the library individually, in groups, or in class settings.
Maintain an inviting, organized, and inclusive library environment that encourages exploration and learning.
Provide instruction in safe and ethical use of information technology.
Train and supervise student aides or volunteers when applicable.
Maintain records and prepare required reports (e.g., usage statistics, budget reports).
Stay current with trends in childrenβs literature, educational technology, and library services.
Valid state teaching certificate with Library Media Specialist endorsement (or equivalent certification).
Bachelorβs degree required; Masterβs in Library Science, Library Media, or related field preferred.
Experience working with elementary-aged children.
Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Familiarity with library automation systems (e.g., Follett Destiny), online databases, and digital media tools.
School library/media center setting.
Frequent interaction with students, teachers, staff, and parents.
