    Library Media Specialist

     

    Reports To: Building Principal

     

    Job Summary:

     

    The School Librarian plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of literacy, inquiry, and lifelong learning. This individual collaborates with staff and students to develop, implement, and manage library programs that enhance academic achievement and personal growth. The Librarian curates diverse resources, integrates technology into learning, and supports students in developing essential information literacy and digital citizenship skills.

     

    Key Responsibilities:

     

    1. Library and Information Management

     
    • Curate and maintain a diverse, up-to-date collection of print and digital resources aligned with curriculum standards, student interests, and district goals.

    • Develop and implement library policies and procedures in compliance with state and district guidelines.

    • Manage the library budget, including purchasing resources, subscriptions, and equipment.

    • Organize and maintain an efficient and welcoming library space conducive to learning and collaboration.

     

    2. Instruction and Collaboration

     
    • Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources into lesson plans and align with the Illinois Learning Standards and content-area curricula.

    • Provide instruction in information literacy, research strategies, and ethical use of information, including copyright and plagiarism prevention.

    • Teach digital citizenship and foster critical thinking regarding media literacy and online content evaluation.

    • Support and co-teach inquiry-based learning projects and encourage interdisciplinary connections.

    • Provide direction for and support of the library assistants

     

    3. Literacy Advocacy and Student Support

     
    • Promote a love of reading by organizing events such as book fairs, author visits, and reading challenges.

    • Provide personalized reading and resource recommendations to students and staff.

    • Support diverse learners, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities, by ensuring equitable access to resources and implementing inclusive library practices.

     

    4. Technology Integration

     
    • Utilize emerging technologies to enhance library services and support digital learning initiatives.

    • Manage digital platforms and library systems (e.g., Follett Destiny, OverDrive) to ensure access to resources.

    • Provide professional development for staff on integrating technology and library resources into their instruction.

    • Integrate Science, technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics into the library curriculum.

     

    5. Professional Growth and Leadership

     
    • Maintain active Illinois Professional Educator Licensure (PEL) with the Library Information Specialist (LIS) endorsement.

    • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay informed about trends in education, technology, and library science.

    • Serve as a member of school and district committees, providing leadership on literacy, technology, and resource utilization.

    • Work professionally with the District administration and elementary library personnel.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    Educational Requirements:

     
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field.

    • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (preferred) or equivalent coursework required for the Library Information Specialist (LIS) endorsement.

     

    Licensure and Certification:

     
    • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL)
    • ?Library Information Specialist (LIS) preffered.
     

    Skills and Competencies:

     
    • Expertise in information literacy, instructional technology, and library science.

    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, administrators, and families.

    • Commitment to promoting equity, inclusion, and access for all students.

     

    Working Conditions:

     
    • Full-time, 10-month position.

    • Work performed in a library setting, with occasional evening or weekend events.

    • Frequent interaction with students, staff, and parents.

     

    Evaluation:

     

    The Librarian’s performance will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal in accordance with district policies and procedures.
