Position Summary

The Distance Education, Library Manager is responsible for serving a dual role as a librarian supporting faculty, staff, and students through library instruction and research services the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities and support College faculty as an instructional design specialist.. The Distant Education, Library Manager will adhere to the general faculty guidelines as specified by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.   


Salary: Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees

Salary Schedule D1, Group A

Salary Range $46,590 - $94,363 (9 months, Exempt).  

Summer employment may be available from $14,384 - $22,488

Annual Salary Range $60,974 - $123,547


Work Hours: Classes are taught day, evening, and weekends on the Huntsville campus. In addition, multiple forms of distance education are offered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

                                          

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Distance Education Library Manager shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook:

  • Serve a dual role as a librarian supporting faculty, staff, and students through library instruction and research services, as well as supporting College faculty as an instructional design specialist.
  • Serve as a representative of both the College library and the College’s distance education programs.
  • Serve as a liaison to assigned academic departments, lead information literacy instruction sessions, develop relevant collections, and provide research consultations.
  • Maintain awareness of the library and instructional design landscape to monitor evolving best practices and pedagogical methodologies.
  • Design and deploy synchronous and asynchronous learning objects in a variety of formats and for a variety of platforms, including online learning modules, videos, research guides, infographics, instructional materials, and other learning objects.
  • Provide in-depth instructional design consultations for all colleagues needing assistance with the delivery of instruction.
  • Requisition books, AV material, and other educational material for the Learning Resources Center
  • Conduct in-service education for faculty members and students pertaining to techniques and the appropriate use of audio-visual equipment in the classroom
  • Develop and maintain a system of accountability for all materials of the library, including the learning resources
  • Coordinate the activities of the individual learning centers in classrooms and shops with the goals and objectives of the central Learning Resource Center
  • Work with the Associate Dean of Instruction and/or Dean of Instruction in locating curriculum development materials
  • Provide technical support to faculty development initiatives
  • Provide technical support for faculty and staff personnel involved in research projects
  • Attend faculty meetings and make reports pertaining to the activities of the library and distance education programs
  • Instruct students in the proper usage of all media resources
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and seminars for professional growth and development
  • Acquires, organizes, and maintains the resources for an accessible, accountable, and operable Learning Resource Center
  • Establish and maintain an articulation agreement with local libraries
  • Maintain compliance with college and program-related accreditation and certification standards.
  • Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts for the college
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Dean of Instruction, Dean of Instruction, and/or President

Qualifications

                                       REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS), or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited graduate school required.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Three (3) years of library experience 
  • Experience in the use of computers and other library and instructional technology software programs such as EZProxy, EBSCO, etc. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, other employees, and the public 
  • Ability to project a professional and congenial demeanor 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years of administrative experience
  • Graduate Certificate or Graduate Degree (master’s level or higher) from an accredited institution of higher education in Instructional Design, Educational/Instructional Technology, Higher Education Teaching & Learning, or equivalent
  • Experience incorporating multi-media instructional techniques into curricula, including instructional technology for web-based teaching and course management utilizing a learning management system (LMS) is preferred
  • Experience in providing training and/or professional development activities
  • Experience with the use of emerging technologies, standards, and their applications to distance education
  • Classroom teaching experience
  • Ability to conceptualize the job functions of the Instructional Design Librarian beyond a physical space or individual department to support the entire College community wherever a need may exist
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex changing environment and complete tasks according to an established timeframe
  • Ability to conceptualize, communicate, and execute plans to meet short- and long-term goals.
  • Ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
