Job Description
1. Provide support to digital humanities graduate consultants and be the main point of escalation when questions arise from research consultations. 2. Works with Computational Methods and Data’s Data Services team to ensure the proper acquisition, transformation, and availability of licensed and open-access electronic humanities-focused data (including text, images, video, and audio) for responsible text mining. 3. Promotes the advanced use of library collections and resources for digital humanities research, teaching, outreach, and engagement, including text mining, artificial intelligence, and digital exhibitions. 4. Provides training, research methods support, and documentation in cleaning, processing, and visualizing licensed, open-access, and scholar-provided humanities data. 5. Advocates for advanced digital humanities methods through consultations, instruction, and training materials for library staff. 6. Maintains Yale Library’s relationship with the Carpentries and the New England Software Carpentry Library Consortium, coordinate related instructional programs, and serve as a Carpentries instructor. 7. Evaluates instructional needs in digital humanities researchers and provides additional, non-Carpentries instructional workshops, in-class sessions, and documentation on topics that might include cleaning text data, managing archival research data including images, creating digital exhibitions, mining text, analyzing networks, or other digital humanities methods and concepts. 8. Trains graduate student researchers in digital humanities methods and concepts through synchronous and asynchronous instruction, including workshops. 9. Participates in Yale Library planning, committees, and task forces, and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations, and collaborative activities. 10. Participates in professional activities outside of Yale and monitors developments and best practices elsewhere to help ensure the excellence of Yale’s research support services and collections. May represent Yale to state, national, and international data organizations.

Required Education and Experience
An MLIS or MIS from an ALA-accredited program of information science, or an equivalent advanced degree.

Position Focus:
The Digital Humanities Librarian, situated in the Computational Methods and Data Department within the Research and Learning portfolio at Yale Library, designs and implements services to support digital humanities research at Yale. Under the supervision of the Research Technology Lead, the incumbent is a user-focused professional dedicated to aiding scholars in learning concepts and methods, acquiring and managing data, and applying best practices for digital humanities research.

Collaborating with subject librarians, geospatial and data librarians, multiple academic departments, and other stakeholders, the Digital Humanities Librarian promotes the use of advanced digital humanities methods, including text mining, artificial intelligence, network analysis, and digital exhibitions through consultations, instructional sessions, and training materials. This role is vital for supporting data education, helping users in the arts and humanities, and those in other departments with an interest in the methods of digital humanities to understand and utilize data effectively.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge and ability with library practices and procedures. Proven experience or certification in teaching a digital skill or method. Undergraduate or graduate degree in humanities.

Required Skill/Ability 1:
Two years professional experience supporting scholarly clients with instruction in digital methods.

Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated understanding of traditional humanities research methods. Familiarity with research or trends in the digital humanities. Ability to perform common data-cleaning techniques and tools.
