Job Description:

Reporting to the Head of Instruction, the Digital and Pedagogical Services Librarian will serve primarily as a member of Special Collections Teaching Team, involving the design and implementation of Special Collections' classes, their management, as well as individual course management. In addition, the librarian will also work with faculty and staff members from outside of the libraries to develop new and innovative approaches to primary source literacy. As a part of this work, the librarian will lead Special Collections' Faculty Fellows program, now in its second year, with the goal of developing faculty engagement with both Special Collections' materials as well as digital humanities-focused approaches to teaching and research. Such work might involve grant writing, program organization, as well as working across the university to understand better as well as implement innovative digital approaches to library pedagogy. The position also includes weekly public service shifts. This position holds the faculty rank of General Librarian.

Responsibilities:

  • 30% INSTRUCTION:
    Serve as a member of Special Collections' teaching team, including planning and leading class visits, as well as assisting others in the development and success of classes.
    Work with faculty members to develop and incorporate digital components to their classes, including the implementation of digitally based assignments and the use of digital primary source materials.
  • 25% DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP
    Develop digital educational activities and resources to be offered by the LSU Libraries Special Collections instruction team.
    Promote LSU's collections of digital primary sources by reaching out to those both within and beyond LSU and help them to better access, interpret, and use such materials.
  • 25% FACULTY FELLOWS PROGRAM
    Develop and lead the Libraries' Faculty Fellows Program, which seeks to cultivate partnerships between University faculty and the Special Collections' teaching program.
    Develop and implement a program that supports the use of Special Collections' materials alongside digital tools and methods.
  • 15% SERVICE AND SUPPORT
    Work weekly shifts in Special Collections public services (reference, backup, public services desk, etc.).
    Work within Special Collections, the Libraries, and the larger university community as a scholarly peer and productive team member, including but not limited to internal and external committees.
  • 5% PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    Engages in professional development opportunities within the university and the profession at large.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited library program or related degree and experience.

One year of related experience

Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students and working with faculty. Experience with digital content delivery in the college classroom. Knowledge of digital humanities and digital scholarship work as it relates to libraries and archives. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Two or more years of related experience

Experience with digital humanities projects and markup languages such as XML, EAD, TEI. Experience and facility with common digital scholarship methods, such as data visualization, textual analysis, geospatial and temporal mapping, text encoding, network analysis, digital publishing and exhibitions. Facility with information literacy and active learning pedagogy, as well as comfort with best practices for teaching primary sources within a special collections context.
