Monroe County Public Library is seeking an engaged, dynamic, innovative Children’s Librarian to join our amazing team in providing excellent patron-facing services and audience programming at library-based service points and within the greater Monroe County community.

 

The ideal candidate is knowledgable about library trends for tweens aged 7-12 and their caregivers and is passionate about providing tween programming such as D&D and garden experiences in a library setting.  This role is responsible for proactively ensuring library services reach current and new audiences and for delivering innovative programs and services to attract and serve a diverse population.

 

Requirements

Requires an MLS from an ALA accredited college or university.  One year of related library experience required, and one year of working with community engagement, programming, and professional leadership is preferred. Indiana Public Library (LPL) Certification – Librarian Level 3 is required (or ability to obtain).

Full-Time (37.5 Hrs./Wk.).

Starting hourly wage begins at $21.37 | Compensation is commensurate with relevant experience/expertise.

Expertise

I employ my skills and knowledge to proactively engage with individuals and organizations to provide, and ensure, Library services reach current and new audiences and meet important community needs. This engagement includes providing patron service at Library service points; participating in community organizations, events, and initiatives; creating and sustaining partnerships; participating on boards, forums and local market research and planning initiatives; and communicating through traditional and new media.


Essential Functions, Responsibilities, Knowledge and Skills

  • I have extensive knowledge of the Library’s services, policies, mission, and objectives. This knowledge extends to one or more audience and subject speciality and Library collection/content.

  • I provide face-to-face Library services at Library service points and in the community.

  • I plan, implement, promote, and assess programs (including events, displays, on-line content, and other aspects) at the Library and in the community and for diverse audiences. My engagement with the community and emphasis on partnering enables me to reach new audiences and consistently provide successful programs which complement community and partner needs rather than duplicate.

  • I build collaborative relationships and have a passion for engaging the community with a positive and enthusiastic approach to working with multiple stake-holders.

  • I have excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patrons, employees and outside contacts. I am consistently pleasant, positive, and responsive to a diverse public and staff.

Required Education/Experience and License/Certifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited college or university required.

  • One year of related library experience working with community engagement, and programming preferred.

  • One year of professional leadership is preferred.

  • May require additional education in specialized area(s).

  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability.

  • Indiana Public Library Certification – Level 3 required. ALA-accredited MLS degree (or equivalent).


Supervision Received
Receives general oversight. Uses a wide range of procedures and methods to meet job responsibilities. Refers only complex questions and problems to the manager; most often accompanied with information, data, and solutions.


Supervision or Leadership Exercised

Provides leadership, assists in setting standards for areas of expertise, and is accountable for results. Participates in resolving challenges related to services and library-wide issues. Collaborates in the development of objectives and evaluating effectiveness, recommends changes to achieve goals. Participates in mentoring and assists with employee professional development. Participates in Person-in-Charge rotation.

Working Conditions

  • Regularly sitting and performing various repetitive actions and extensive use of keyboards, mice, monitors, and varied digital devices, requires use of hands, fingers and repetitive motions.

  • Frequently standing, walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, and moving from one work site to another.

  • Work has standard vision requirements; frequent speaking, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

  • Occasional to frequent travel, entering and exiting vehicles, driving, moving, and carrying materials to and from various locations.

  • Occasional moderate lifting (25 lbs.) and infrequent heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Assistance with excessive loads is required.

  • Normal library working conditions; moderate exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.).

  • Occasional exposure to fluctuations in interior conditions such as noise and temperatures.

  • May encounter exposure to outside elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. when traveling on library business.

  • Infrequent climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms.

MCPL employees may be assigned to work on weekdays, evenings or weekends.  MCPL remains open during local academic breaks and we are unable to accommodate extended absences, including those associated with semester breaks. MCPL work schedules adjust in response to changing operational needs.
