Job Summary

The Collections and Cataloging Librarian is a library administrative position responsible for overseeing the development, organization, and maintenance of the university’s physical and digital library collections. This position provides leadership in acquisitions, cataloging, and resource management to ensure that the library's holdings support the university’s academic programs, assessment goals, and accreditation standards. This position supervises three staff members responsible for circulation, interlibrary loan, copy cataloging, and acquisitions contracting.

Primary Responsibilities

Collection Management and Development

  • Manage the development and maintenance of the library’s tangible and digital collections in alignment with institutional curricula and accreditation requirements.
  • Collaborate with subject librarians and faculty to evaluate, recommend, and prioritize materials for acquisition.
  • Assess the collection for relevance, diversity, and alignment with academic goals, conducting periodic audits and usage analysis.

Cataloging

  • Perform original and complex cataloging of print and electronic resources using Library of Congress classification and subject headings.
  • Ensure compliance with national and LDS-specific cataloging standards and metadata practices.
  • Oversee bibliographic records and ensure quality control across the catalog.

Acquisitions Oversight

  • Supervise the acquisitions process, including approval plans, vendor relations, and resource trials.
  • Work closely with the designated acquisitions staff members responsible for licensing, purchasing, and contract negotiations to ensure effective and ethical resource procurement.
  • Monitor budget allocations and usage statistics for collection development.

Supervision and Team Leadership

  • Directly supervise three library staff members managing circulation, interlibrary loan, copy cataloging, and acquisitions contracting.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Facilitate communication across library departments to support efficient workflows and shared goals.

Institutional Collaboration

  • Participate in academic planning and assessment conversations to ensure the collection meets faculty and student needs.
  • Stay informed on trends in higher education, information literacy, and digital scholarship.
  • Represent the library in institutional committees related to curriculum or accreditation as needed.

Minimum Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in library and information science (MLIS or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in technical services, including original cataloging and collection development.

Skills

  • Proficiency in MARC, RDA, Library of Congress classification, and cataloging tools such as OCLC Connexion.
  • Familiarity with cataloging practices and resources specific to LDS Libraries.
  • Knowledge of higher education curriculum development, learning outcomes, and accreditation processes.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems (e.g., Alma, Koha) and discovery layers (e.g., Primo, VuFind).
  • Ability to demonstrate AI proficiency and to contextualize AI usage with library resources, services, and campus curriculum.
  • Experience managing library budgets or acquisition workflows.
  • Knowledge of licensing and vendor negotiations.

Approximate starting salary: $73,000 – $86,000. The wage offered could be above or below range based on education and experience as it relates to the job description.
