Children's Library Assistant - PT - SSI

This is a part-time position. The work schedule is 20 hours per week and requires working nights, weekends, and during lunch shifts. This position is eligible for prorated paid time off and holiday leave. This position is not eligible for health insurance, disability and pension benefits

 

JOB SUMMARY
This position provides patron services support for the library’s children’s programs and services. An incumbent in this position may be designated Senior Library Assistant.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Plans, develops, coordinates, and leads children’s programs for library patrons.
  • Assists patrons at the circulation desk and in the children’s department; checks materials in and out; places holds on materials; issues and renews library cards; assists parents, youth, and other patrons in locating materials in the collection; assists patrons in registering for programs.
  • Operates computer software to manage the circulation of library materials.
  • Sorts, organizes, and routes children’s department library materials.
  • Reports issues with library facilities that may affect the comfort and safety of patrons and staff.
  • Participates in job-related training and continuing education.
  • Performs related duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of children’s library programming principles.
  • Knowledge of patron services principles.
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of library call numbers and shelving principles.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs and databases.
  • Skill in the provision of patron services.
  • Skill in the use of a cash register and credit card machine.
  • Skill in the development and delivery of library programming.
  • Skill in the use of an automated library system.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Library Branch Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include county and library policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related patron service and administrative duties. The unique needs of each patron contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide support for library children’s programs and services. Successful performance in this position ensures the effective and efficient delivery of services to patrons.

 

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county personnel, patrons, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects.
  • The work is typically performed in a library.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
