SUMMARY

This is a highly responsible, professional, and administrative position that works under the direction of the Library Director in planning, directing, and coordinating the Village’s neighborhood library programs, activities, and services to meet the multi-cultural needs of the community in accordance with library policies and library science principles geared toward youth and teen services.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Establishes policies, strategies and plans for Youth and Teen Services
  • Manage programs and material selections within the budget, 
  • Plans promotes and implements special programs for children while simultaneously working on several projects
  • Responsible for a variety of diversified activities
  • Selects books and other materials for preschoolers through high school. Promote literacy and provide materials that reflect the diverse interests of the community. Develop and promote programming to serve the diverse interests and needs of the community.
  • Conducts story hours, prepares reading lists; provides reader’s advisory and reference aide to patrons. 
  • Coordinates the Summer Youth Volunteer Program. 
  • Assists the Library Director with planning and coordinating routine and special projects, as well as the supervision of the efficient operation of the library.  
  • Develop curriculum connections across the range of grades. 
  • Develop a close and positive relationship working relationship with local schools and the PTA through visits, book talks and programs for classes who visit the library.
  • Writes reports, letters, newsletters, grants and press releases, designs forms, produces fliers and newsletters using desktop publishing.
  • Provides excellent customer service to the public and staff

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in library science, political science, education, business administration or related field (or the ability to attain a degree within an agreed upon timeframe). A master’s degree in a Library education program accredited by the American Library Association desirable, with at least two years paid professional supervisory and administrative full-time work experience in a public library or municipal government or related business administration experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of library science and administration.  
  • Thorough knowledge of general reference, classification, ordering, circulation, and children's library work. 
  • Thorough knowledge of reader interest levels and of books and authors. 
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct library developed programs.
  • Ability to interpret community interest and needs, and to plan and provide continuing library services.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.  
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time as required.
  • Must possess the ability to read, write and speak English. 
  • English-Spanish bilingual abilities preferred.
  • Must possess a knowledge of basic business equipment (i.e. computers, software and library websites, scanners, fax machine, copy machine, calculator and various other business equipment as necessary).
