Bloomfield Township Public Library is looking for an enthusiastic, energetic Library Assistant II committed to providing high-quality public library service. Bloomfield Township Public Library is a class V library with a service population of 44,000+ people and an $8.9 million annual operating budget. There is strong community support for the Library, its collections, services, and the programs offered. The Library promotes inclusivity in the diverse collections and programs available to all ages and abilities. Technology is integrated into library services. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to provide quality public service and the desire to work in a collaborative team environment. 

 

POSITION TITLE:                 Circulation Library Assistant II

DEPARTMENT:                     Circulation, reporting to Department Head

HOURS:

Part-time, 20 hours weekly, including some evenings and weekends. Sundays are overtime, paid at time

and one half in addition to the 20-hour schedule.

 WAGE & BENEFITS:

$21.35 - $29.89 per hour. An increase is possible upon successful completion of orientation. Pro-rated paid time-off benefits, i.e., sick, personal business, vacation, holiday, and emergency time. Term life and disability income insurance provided, as well as an employee assistance program (EAP).

 

REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM:

·         High school diploma

·         Experience working with Windows-based computers and cash registers.

·         Able to lift, push, and/or pull at least 20 pounds; ability to visually review materials and discern vocal and audible tones with or without reasonable accommodation.

·         Strong attention to detail.

·         Dependable and flexible work habits.

·         Desire to serve the public in a positive manner.

DESIRABLE: Public library work experience in Circulation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

DIRECT PUBLIC SERVICE:

·         Provides positive, pleasant professional services to the public.

·         Handles money transactions.

·         Resolves patron issues regarding library card account.

INDIRECT PUBLIC SERVICE:

·         Uses current technologies for communication.

·         Performs closing procedures for the Circulation desk.

·         Oversees department in absence of supervisors.

·         Assists in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: 

·         Maintains knowledge of state-of-the art technologies and directions.

·         Participates in professional organizations; seeks opportunities for professional growth and development.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

·         Process patron registration information, verify accuracy of patron database.

·         Discuss notes on patron record with patron, explaining and resolving any issues.

·         Explain residency requirements to obtain library cards.

·         Explain and collect fees for lost or damaged items.

·         Assist patrons at self-checkouts.

·         Direct patron to appropriate department or desk for assistance.

·         Check out and in materials from the Library collection and MeL (materials from other libraries throughout Michigan).

·         Count opening cash tills and balance closing cash tills.

·         Close the department; ensure all closing procedures are performed.

·         Resolve patron issues in the absence of supervisors.

·         Answer department telephone and check voicemail.

·         Renew items over the telephone and at desk, resolve patron issues regarding renewals.

·         Troubleshoot issues with the AMH (automated material handling) machine.

·         Check contents of cases used to hold CDs, books on tape, and DVD to verify all associated items returned.

·         Process items returned damaged as well as items going to repair.

·         Check gate alarms on RFID (Radio-frequency identification) system.

·         Assist Library Assistants I and Pages with procedures in the absence of supervisors.
