Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Branch Manager for it Barron F. Black branch that manages library functions for a branch, a division within the central library or as an assistant manager of a large agency of the library. Provides customer service to patrons, provides information, promotes general usage of facilities, and operates all library equipment. Plans and coordinates special projects as needed, including managing the federal depository collection, coordinating system-wide public initiatives, interlibrary loan activities, distributing promotional materials, collection development, and personnel development.

Departmental Hiring Salary Range:  $59,393

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:
 

  • Supervises employee recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling and performance reviews.
  • Directs the operations of the library including customer service, reference and readers’ advisory services, circulation, public computing, use of databases and online digital materials for streaming and downloading, and collection development.
  • Reports directly to the Operations Manager.
  • Monitors the branch library budget and oversees acquisitions of equipment and the collection.
  • Establishes and maintains policies and procedures and implements quality control standards.
  • Provides leadership and mentoring with regard to staff development.
  • Oversees facility maintenance, custodial services and security services.
  • Promotes partnerships and collaboration between the library and the community through outreach and community engagement.
  • Coordinates programming efforts by working with other branches, volunteers, the Youth Services Department, Programming and Outreach Department, and the Multicultural Programming Committee. 
  • Responsible for preparing various updates and reports as required by Library Administration.

Education/Experience

Work requires specialized knowledge in a professional or technical field. Work requires professional level of knowledge of a discipline which is acquired in a Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.

Two years experience as a professional Librarian or equivalent professional experience including management experience.  Proficiency in Microsoft applications are required.

Preferred candidate will possess 3-5 years of prior library experience, previous experience in reference work, customer service, management, program planning and/or collection development.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • State of Virginia Professional Librarian Certification within six months of employment.
Work Hours:  Monday-Friday 9:30 AM– 6:00 PM Total: 40 Hours  
                         (occasional evening and weekend hours required).

Signing Bonus:  This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.
