Position Summary

West Chester University of Pennsylvania’s Library Services team invites applicants for the position of Interlibrary Loan Technician.  The hours of this position are Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with alternate work schedule during breaks, intersessions, and winter and summer sessions.

The University Libraries empower intellectual exploration through building connections, collections, and community.    As an active partner in the University’s academic programs, the libraries are a major contributor to WCU’s core mission of student success. The faculty members serve as both instructors of information literacy and stewards of library resources. The staff members support the operation of the libraries whether it be assisting patrons at help desks, making the various library resources ready for patron use, or providing access to library technology.

In support of student and faculty research, the Interlibrary Loan Technician facilitates resource sharing including the lending and borrowing of library materials; uses a variety of resources to locate hard to find research materials; helps to ensure that library resources are readily accessible to users; and provides assistance at the library help desks.  The ILL Technician also uses ILL software, scanners, and other equipment and tools which require advanced library technical skills.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of resource sharing; experience with Library Services Platforms and ILL management systems; excellent customer service skills; the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a diverse campus community including faculty, staff and students while contributing to a positive and professional work environment.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Work collaboratively with the library staff and student employees to maintain ILL workflows
  • Process requests utilizing ILL management systems, the Library Services Platform, and other software or cloud-based tools for both lending and borrowing
  • Digitize library materials utilizing scanning equipment and software for editing and delivering files (PDFs)
  • Prepare materials for shipment and receive incoming materials
  • Hire, schedule, train, and supervise student employees
  • Utilize PCard to purchase library materials, office supplies, and copyright fees
  • Prepare invoices for services rendered and lost materials
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Public Services to ensure that ILL requests comply with the provisions of Section 108(g)(2) Copyright Law
  • Assist faculty and students at help desks with utilizing library services and collections, answering and referring questions appropriately, circulating library materials, and providing basic technology assistance
  • Participate in professional development to remain current on national and international interlibrary loan codes, copyright law, standards and other guidelines related to ILL
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four years of library-clerical work including two years of advanced library clerical work comparable to Library Assistant II, and graduation from high school OR
  • Two years of advanced library clerical work, and an associate degree or equivalent training with major course work in library science OR
  • Bachelor's degree
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of library techniques, procedures, and working tools used in accessing, cataloging, circulating; and maintaining library materials
  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in bibliography preparation and the use of library research materials
  • Knowledge of reader comprehension and interest levels of library patrons
  • Skill in the application of the techniques and procedures used in cataloging
  • Ability to apply library methods and principles in circulation and providing reader services
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and the public

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using ILL management software such as ILLiad or Reshare
  • Experience using Alma or related Library Management Platform
  • Knowledge of national and international interlibrary loan codes
  • Experience troubleshooting basic equipment and software issues
  • Customer service experience
  • Supervisory experience
