Primary Purpose:
Supervise and manage the home campus school library media center. Oversee the district library and media centers of each campus. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to meet personal and academic needs. Promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading, viewing, and listening. Serve as teacher, material expert, and curriculum advisor to ensure that the library media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university
Valid Texas teaching certificate, with librarian certification or endorsement
Master’s in Library Science (preferred) or other educational field
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of library science and library practices
Competence in use of current library and classroom technology
Proficiency in the instruction of reading and research skills
Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Five (5) years’ experience in library at both the elementary and secondary levels
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Campus Leadership
1. Benchmark the School Library Program to school, state, and national program standards.
District Leadership
2. Meet with library aides from across the district on a regular basis for support and information sharing.
3. Support library aides with goal-setting and evaluation preparation at the campus level.
4. Organize and assist library aides with district-wide reading competitions/initiatives.
5. Select the program/resources and oversee the implementation of those resources for Digital Citizenship.
6. Provide mentor services to Library Apprentice.
Instruction
7. Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students and other library users to help them locate resources and use research techniques. Serve as an information resource for users of print and digital library/media center materials.
8. Design, develop, and present staff development for teachers on the availability and use of campus and district learning resources with support of district Library Services Committee.
9. Plan, co-teach, and evaluate instruction in information skills and digital literacy.
10. Provide individual assistance to students in identifying, selecting, interpreting and evaluating information.
11. Work with teachers to incorporate information skill instruction into the school’s curriculum.
12. Interact with students and adults in a consistent, fair, and positive manner.
Instructional Support
13. Promote appreciation and understanding of literature and reading.
14. Provide leadership, instruction and consulting assistance in the use of instructional and information technology.
15. Participate in curriculum development and assessment on a regular basis.
Resource Management
16. Facilitate the arrangement of resources according to standard library practices.
17. Facilitate and maintain a balanced collection of information resources by using standard selection tools, consultation with students and faculty, as well as collection and curriculum analysis.
18. Facilitate the use, distribution, maintenance and inventory of library media center resources and equipment.
19. Facilitate the acquisition and use of instructional materials from outside sources, such as the Region 10 Education Service Center and video streaming subscriptions, with the Chief Academic Officer.
20. Facilitate an environment that is inviting, safe, flexible, and conducive to the learning needs of individuals and groups.
21. Facilitate fair and equitable access to library facilities and resources through appropriate scheduling.
Administration
22. Facilitate the development of campus library budget according to priorities of the instructional program, established guidelines and district business practices with principals and the Chief Academic Officer.
23. Coordinate with the Chief Academic Officer the budget purchases for district-wide resources.
24. Support campus administration in maintaining systematic records and data as well as compile periodic reports to facilitate program evaluation.
25. Ensure each library/media center within the district aligns of the Texas Library Standards for budgeting and collection development.
26. Comply with district and campus policies and procedures as well as federal and state laws.
Other
27. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing to confer with district personnel, students, and/or parents.
28. Maintain confidentiality.
29. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise library personnel, student assistants and volunteers.
