General Statement

Under the direction of the Director of Library Services, the Youth Services Librarian will be responsible for: planning, organizing, and implementing library programs for children, teen, and their families; provide excellent reader advisory and information services; strengthen existing partnerships with community agencies; develop and maintain the youth and teen materials collection in all formats; collaborate with Outreach and Adult Services Librarian to provide services beyond the library’s walls; and provide reference and reader advisory services to patrons of all ages while maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of children's and young adult literature. The Youth Services Librarian position focuses on planning and presenting engaging educational, entertaining, and vibrant programs for children, young adults, and families. Overall, this position is vital in promoting library programs and services, ensuring a welcoming environment for young patrons, and contributing to the overall goals of the library.

The minimum starting salary is $55,931.00 - $69,074.79* + Competitive Benefits* Eligible experience, education, and expertise may provide a greater starting base pay within the full pay range.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan and present programs for children, young adults, and families to encourage reading and the use of library facilities and materials to create lifelong library users.
  • Provide reference and readers advisory services to patrons of children and teens while maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of children's and young adult literature.
  • Provide instruction to youth, parents, and teachers in the use of library resources, answer reference and reader’s advisory questions.
  • Collaborates with Outreach and Adult Services Librarian to coordinate youth and teen outreach programs to community.
  • Supervise program presentations by partners/volunteers.
  • May partner with schools and community organizations to provide library services for youth and teens.
  • Creates attractive and educational displays, informational finding tools, and handouts to enhance the library and its offerings.
  • Maintain internal and external youth program calendar.
  • Coordinate publicity and updates for youth services to the library web page.
  • Monitor expenditures of youth program funds.
  • Provide excellent customer service, assist patrons with library resources, and enforce library policies. 
  • Maintain and submit program statistics.
  • May select, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate personnel and volunteers.
  • May facilitate staff meetings.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining juvenile and young adult print and multimedia collections: evaluating existing resources, suggesting new materials for purchase based on collection development policy and community needs, and weeding the collection.
  • Keeps informed of current trends, technology, and developments affecting librarians through professional reading, continuing education opportunities, and participation in professional organizations. Attend workshops, conferences, and training as needed.
  • Handles patron complaints tactfully and resolves issues.
  • Follow all library policies and procedures.
  • Daily supervisory operations are also a key part of this role, including opening and closing the library, processing reports, working at the circulation desk, and managing electronic correspondence through various channels.
  • Assist at the circulation desk, such as: checking library materials in and out; processing library card applications; handling accounts questions; collecting funds and handling cash; receiving and responding to phone and onsite queries; explaining and applying library policies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Prepared to work any day of the week between 8:00am – 9:00pm. Occasionally earlier and/or later hours may be required. The work schedule may vary weekly, daily, or even hourly to accommodate the library operating hours and events. Schedule: Scheduling flexibility is imperative. The schedule may vary depending on the needs of the library. Standard hours may include day and/or evening hours to include weekdays and weekends.

Minimum / Preferred Qualifications, Experience, and/or Certifications Required




  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science is required. 
  • A minimum of three years (3) of full-time experience in youth and teen librarianship in a public library. 
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an insurable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to speak, read, and write Spanis

  • Knowledge of technologies and practices used within a public library.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to plan and provide youth-oriented library programs and outreach.
  • Ability to create or curate professional resources.
  • Ability to use professional knowledge to manage the library's collection.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a self-directed workload.
  • Ability to exercise tact, good judgment, and initiative.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret Library policy for staff and the public.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in dealing with the public and in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.
