YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Full-time (40 hours per week)
 
Euclid Public Library is accepting applications for an enthusiastic, resourceful, and creative Youth Services Librarian.  Successful candidates must be passionate about providing an exceptional library experience for all patrons, especially teens and children. The ideal candidate will have customer service experience and possess excellent communication skills.
 
Responsibilities for this position include providing reference service to patrons in-person, by phone and email, assisting patrons with using library equipment and accessing library resources, preparing and presenting library programs, conducting school visits, and developing the juvenile nonfiction and eBook collections.  On a rotating basis, the incumbent will serve as Senior in Charge of the building in the absence of the manager.
 
Qualifications:  MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program required; students within 6 credits of graduation are encouraged to apply.  Knowledge of youth literature and popular culture essential; valid Ohio driver’s license required.
 
Schedule: Mondays and Tuesdays 12:45pm-9:00pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 8:00am-5:00pm, alternating Fridays (8:00am-5:00pm) and Saturdays (8:30am-5:00pm). Overtime Sunday work available October to May.
 
Starting Rate: $24.66 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Youth Services Librarian assists in accomplishing that mission by providing reference services, conducting programs and maintaining and/or cataloging an assigned area of the library collection for children, young adults, parents and teachers.
 
POSITION DUTIES:
 
50% Public Service
* Answers reference questions and locates library materials for patrons
* Arranges interlibrary loans and reserves
* Assists patrons in using library equipment
* Recommends age appropriate materials to patrons
* Will be required to work public service points as assigned
25% Collection Development
* Displays and promotes library material
* Examines material and database records for errors
* Maintains knowledge of available materials and monitors patron reading preferences
* Monitors budget for assigned areas, which include children, young adult, parents and teachers
* Reads reviews of library material regularly
* Selects and maintains collections according to professional standards.
* Selects materials according to requests and trends
* Verifies and assigns call numbers to materials as needed
20% Programming
* Conducts library tours and school and community visits
* Creates program materials for youth services programs
* Maintains files of stories and songs for programs
* Prepares and conducts programs for children, young adults, parents and  teachers
* Prepares annotated bibliographies, booklists, and handouts
* Selects age appropriate materials and activities for programs
  5% Miscellaneous
* Alerts supervisor to problems encountered in work routines
* Attends meetings and serves on internal and external committees
* Oversees the department in the absence of the Youth Services Manager and serves as Senior-in-Charge
* Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings,
   conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions
* Participates in the Strategic Planning process
* Performs additional duties and assignments, as  requested

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Education, Training and/or Experience
* Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited school.
* Valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record
* Specialized knowledge of children’s and young adult materials and services.

* Understanding of patron confidentiality requirements and ethics responsibilities under Ohio law*
*May be acquired after hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 
Work requires light physical effort including very frequent standing, walking and lifting of materials. Requires the ability to operate business office and library equipment; the ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set up and maintain work files; lift, retrieve and provide materials to patrons in a timely manner.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work performed in good working conditions – occasionally subjected to poor physical or environmental conditions and/or occasional health and safety hazards. There is daily use of a computer.  Position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and requires periodic participation and attendance at library events and meetings.
