Description

The Youth Services Librarian plans, directs, and implements outstanding programs and services for all library customers, with a special emphasis on those 18 and under.  The incumbent works with all library staff in multiple locations to provide connections and opportunities for youth to become engaged with library materials, services, programs, learning opportunities, other youth, or other community members, and service opportunities. Additionally, all library staff are expected to use quality customer service with both internal and external customers.

Examples of Duties

  • Plans, organized, implements, supervises and evaluates services to youth. 
  • Participates in planning and contributes to the development of goals, policies and procedures as relating to youth. 
  • Advocates for youth services with other community agencies. 
  • Initiates, plans and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by young adults. 
  • Involves young adults in planning and implementing services for their age group. 
  • Selects, evaluates, maintains and discards juvenile and young adult materials based on professional judgment, preferences of youth customers and acknowledged review sources. 
  • Provides reference and readers’ advisor services, and library orientation to youth of all ages. 
  • Collaborates with schools and other agencies to serve youth of the community. 
  • Promotes, publicizes and represents youth services and the library to the community and local agencies in cooperation with other library departments. 
  • Integrates and uses technology to assist young adults and to engage an involve them. 
  • Creates an environment that attracts and invites young adults to use the facilities and collection. 
  • Identifies, collects and interprets statistics as needed.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

Emergency Response 
County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Library Science Degree from an ALA accredited college or university 
  • Two (2) years of experience working with the public

License, Certifications or Registrations

  • Teaching Certificate preferred 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License and be insurable by current insurance carrier

Special Requirements

  • NIMS IS-700, IS-800, ICS-100, and ICS-200 within 6 months of employment
  • County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment working closely with others
  • Some outside walking, standing, kneeling, bending, and stooping may occasionally be required in diverse environments
