The Valdez Consortium Library is hiring a Temporary Youth Services Library Assistant. 

The Youth Services Assistant is a creative, enthusiastic, self-motivated, adaptive individual with strong communication and customer service skills. This is a temporary position to work part time throughout the year. This position works under the supervision of the Youth Services Librarian. This position may require evening, weekend, and holiday availability. This job entails further on-the-job training, including CPR/First Aid.

This is a temporary, non-benefited position working the following schedule: 

  • Wednesdays 2 pm - 6 pm, 
  • Fridays 11 am - 6 pm (with an hour-long lunch break), and 
  • Saturdays 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm.
This position is open until filled, review of applications begins April 7, 2026.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum two (2) years of working experience working with children, teens, and families.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media.
  • Must obtain and maintain certifications in CPR/AED, and First Aid within two (2) months of date of hire.
  • Must pass background check.

Physical requirements and work environment:
  • Work is performed predominantly in a library environment.
  • Occasionally work may be performed out of doors and in inclement weather.
  • Work performed be subject to walking, stooping, lifting, carrying, and prolonged standing.


Primary duties and responsibilities: 

  • Assume programming and outreach responsibilities of the Youth Services Librarian in their absence.
  • Assist Youth Services Librarian with programming preparation, implementation, and clean up. 
  • Stays up-to-date on library trends and resources in order to assist patrons and provide readers’ advisory, particularly for children and teens. 
  • Develops age-appropriate and culturally responsive displays of library materials. 
  • Represents the library at local school and community events as needed.
  • Ability to speak before groups of children, teens, and/or adults. 
  • Prepares marketing materials to promote library programs as needed. 
  • Engages children, teens, and their families during library programs, activities, and visits. 
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required. 
  • Provide exceptional customer service to program participants and patrons. 
  • Communicate with general public, staff and supervisors in a professional and timely manner, both written and verbal. 
  • Work in a safe manner and report unsafe activity and conditions, and intervene as needed.
  • Work as a team member maintaining a cooperative attitude with employees, staff, and supervisors.
  • Complies with all City and Departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 
  • Provide support in overseeing programs as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
