The City of Milwaukie is excited to announce a newly created Teen Librarian position at the Ledding Library!

In this dynamic role, you'll be a vital bridge between our adult and youth teams, serving patrons of all ages at both our Adult and Youth service desks. You'll deliver essential library services, develop and maintain diverse collections, and plan and coordinate engaging programs with a special focus on our teen community, including facilitating our Teen Advisory Board (TAB).

As a lead worker, you'll also be a key member of our Person-in-Charge (PIC) team. We'll rely on your expertise, alongside our managers, to help maintain a safe and welcoming library environment for everyone.

This position works a regular Tuesday-Saturday schedule, including one evening per week, with occasional flexibility required for programs, meetings, or training. The Teen Librarian works under the direction of a library manager.

Essential Functions

What You'll Do:

Deliver Library Services to the Community:

  • Assist patrons, represent the library at community events, provide information, promote services, and direct visitors to resources.

  • Work with community partners to reach underserved populations and maintain confidentiality.

Develop and Maintain Library Collections: 

  • Select and deselect materials, manage the budget for your assigned collection, and ensure our collections are inclusive and reflect our diverse community.

  • You'll also create displays that highlight and promote our diverse community.

Create and Conduct Engaging and Intentional Programs:

  • Develop programs aligned with city priorities, promote early literacy and lifelong learning, work with partners to reach underserved populations, and market library programs and events.

Maintain a Safe and Welcoming Environment:

  • Serve as a lead worker, greet visitors, proactively monitor spaces, address disruptions, and seek support from staff, managers, or police when needed.

  • You'll also maintain and clean items and shared spaces as needed.

Uphold City Values:

Education & Experience

What You'll Bring:

  • Education/Certifications: A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program is required.

  • Experience: Two years of customer service experience is essential. Two years of experience working in a public library is preferred.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of library and information services principles and practices, and library classification system

    • Ability to apply intellectual freedom principles.

    • Ability to determine community information needs and make budget recommendations.

    • Strong teamwork skills, including addressing difficult issues professionally.

    • Ability to welcome and embrace people from diverse backgrounds.

    • Ability to explain policies, address behavior violations, and de-escalate situations.

    • Ongoing computer skills learning.

    • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.

    • Strong communication skills.

Additional Information

Working Conditions & Schedule:

Librarians primarily work in a library/office setting and frequently interact with the public. The role routinely involves extended shifts at a public service desk, handling a variety of questions. You may need to move book crates and carts up to 40 pounds and position yourself at various heights to shelve materials. Periodic stressful or emotionally heightened situations, including emergencies, behavior problems, intoxication, and health events, may occur. The Teen Librarian works a regular schedule, Tuesday-Saturday, and includes one night per week. They may need to flex occasionally for programs, meetings, or training.
