Substitute Library Technician

Summary
Position performs customer service functions for the library, including circulation and technical service work functions. Employee provides information and assistance to patrons, responding to customer inquiries, requests, and concerns. The position requires a thorough knowledge of library procedures, practices, and policies. Employees must exercise good judgment and initiative and work independently and as a team.
Supervision
The employee works under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills & Aptitudes:
Excellent customer service skills, courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are required to interact with patrons and staff successfully.
Education & Experience
High School diploma required; associate degree preferred. Knowledge of library principles and procedures and technology skills preferred.
Workflow and Responsibilities
The functions and duties listed below reflect typical duties currently required for this position. However, evolving technology and library work functions result in a work environment that is constantly in flux. The employee is expected to adjust to changes and additions to the work function responsibilities required for the successful operation of the circulation department and library operation.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
● Works under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.
● Provides a welcoming, friendly, and helpful environment to all patrons while maintaining the library's mission of providing equal access to all patrons while enforcing library policies.
● Performs a variety of routine and well-defined duties, which require judgment and initiative in assisting patrons and responding to requests.
● Enjoys frequent contact with the general public, requiring courtesy, tact, and patience in assisting patrons.
● Must appreciate the importance of confidentiality and privacy of patron circulation records, personal patron information, and patron book selections.
● Moderate physical effort required in performing duties, including lifting, carrying, and/or shelving books under typical library conditions with minimal exposure to hazards.
Examples of Work:
● Assists patrons at the circulation desk, checking materials in and out, registering new patrons for library cards and Internet access, issues library cards, and replaces lost cards assists with holds and renewals; prepares and sends overdue notices, and resolves overdue and lost materials issues.
● Maintain working knowledge of multiple computer software and databases required to exercise daily duties, including, but not limited to, Workflows, ILL, ComCat, Open Office, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, assorted reference databases, the Paul Pratt Memorial Library home page, and the Internet.
● Assist patrons in utilizing the above-mentioned services.
● Receive daily transit, including unpacking, checking in, shelving books on hold shelf, and calling patrons to alert them that their materials have arrived.
● Provide reference assistance and reader advisory to library patrons.
● Assists in the processing of shelving materials.
● Assists with special projects.
● Print morning, noon, and evening hold lists, pull requested items and prepare them for transit to requesting libraries.
● Collect money for overdue fines, lost or damaged items, printing, sales of fundraising items for Friends, replacement of library cards, and occasional donations to the library.
● Answer telephone and assist patrons with holds, renewals, general reference, museum pass reservations, hours, program room, donations, directions, etc.
● Reserve and distribute Museum Passes.
● Clean and repair damaged library media.
● Maintain copier and assist patrons with copying.
● Shelf reading assigned sections of library collection, shifting books, weeding, and blocking shelves for neatness.
● Monitor book drops.
● Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the library: picking up trash, filling scrap paper and pencil supplies, keeping paper in all the printers and copiers, and organizing furniture.
● Assist with library programs.
Grade: PT-6 Step-1
Salary: $22.12 per hour, time and one half Sunday pay ($33.18).

This position functions on an on-call basis. Availability evenings and weekends is required, with an emphasis on Sundays.
