SUMMARY: This position works with the Children’s Librarian to identify and interpret user needs; plan and implement a variety of youth programs to encourage library usage and to foster community relations; provide exceptional customer service, reference, and readers' advisory; and assist Library patrons in the use of library services, facilities, and equipment. Exemplify the high standards and expectations for the library in its daily operations and services.
SUPERVISION: Works under the supervision of the Children’s Librarian. May be required to exercise supervision of clerks, pages, and/or volunteers from time to time.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with the Children’s Librarian to:
PERIPHERAL DUTIES: Attend workshops as needed or as available. Serve as a member of various city employee committees, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Masters of Library Science or Bachelor in related field. At least 1 year of Customer Service experience AND at least 1 year working directly with Children and Young Adults.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Strong automation/computer background. Experience with a variety of Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office products
(B) Knowledge of Polaris Library Systems a plus
(C) Ability to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner
(D) Strong Internet search skills
(E) Proficient with Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instragram, etc.)
(F) Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
(G) Strong presentation/bibliographic instruction experience and skills. Teaching experience a plus
(H) Knowledge of current library practices and technologies
(I) Requires some evening and weekend work
(J) Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
(K) Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Bilingual (Spanish and English) a plus, but not required. Must possess a valid State Driver's License or ability to obtain one.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Noise level in the work environment depends on the number of patrons visiting the library at any given time.
