About

Transylvania County Library seeks two part-time Library Pages. These positions are scheduled on an as-needed basis, with a typical workweek ranging between 4 and 10 hours. In this role, work consist of returning materials to library shelves and organization of Library materials. Employees in this position will have contact with the public in the process of shelving materials and are expected to answer directional questions to help patrons locate library materials. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of a librarian or library associate.

Essential Functions

  • Sort books and other library materials, load book truck, return materials to proper locations, and keep items in order on the shelves.
  • Fill displays and merchandize materials based on current best practices.
  • Participate in the upkeep of the library by returning materials left on tables and desks to their proper locations, shelf reading, identifying damaged items, and maintaining general cleanliness; may assist with recycling programs.
  • Assist patrons in the library with basic questions on topics including use of the library, library programs and services, the library catalog, and the location of materials. Makes appropriate referrals to other staff.
  • Abide by and participate in the implementation and ongoing oversight of safety standards and regulations.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Education and Experience

Minimum Education & Experience:
To be considered for this position, an applicant must have an interest in library service and programs. Must be at least 15 years of age. Must be actively seeking high school diploma or GED, if not already obtained. Some work or volunteer experience in a customer service position with public contact is preferred.

Additional Requirements:
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Successful completion of SBI background check with required fingerprinting by Sheriff Office. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)
  • Successful completion of Transylvania County standard background check. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)
  • Successful completion of drug screening. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)

Physical Demands
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing, walking and sitting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

Work Environment

Work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
