    Part-time Library Assistant – Collection Services

    Job Purpose
    Under general supervision performs a variety of cataloging and collection duties in the library technical services areas.

     

    Essential Job Functions

     
    • Performs routine copy cataloging; searches bibliographic utilities to find matching records
    • Edits bibliographic records to ensure accuracy and discoverability
    • Assigns call numbers to items in accordance with library collection parameters
    • Attaches items to library database
    • Re-classifies items as needed
    • Resolves cataloging discrepancies when they arise
    • Communicates with librarians regarding various cataloging and classification issues
    • Checks in serials and updates online system to reflect serials holdings, locations, etc.
    • Handles serials claiming and resolves issues with serial vendors as needed.
    • Weeds serials on an ongoing basis in accordance with library guidelines
    • Performs database maintenance projects and clean-up as assigned
    • Provides support for special cataloging projects as needed
    • Follows established policies and procedures; may suggest ways to increase efficiency
    • Other duties as assigned
     
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Experience with computers and integrated library systems
    • Knowledge of general library procedures and terminology
    • Experience with MARC format, cataloging rules, and subject headings
    • Knowledge of DDC library classification system with the ability to assign call numbers
    • Knowledge of OCLC cataloging utility
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to manage a high volume of work accurately and efficiently
    • Ability to plan work, prioritize and organize tasks, and pay attention to detail.
     
    Work Environment
    Work is performed in an office setting which is subject to interruption. Performs varied functions requiring judgment to ensure compliance with applicable departmental and town policies, procedures and methods. Must be mobile, able to bend and reach, able to push/pull carts up to 75 pounds, and lift objects up to 25 pounds. Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods. May be in constant contact with employees. Must be able to concentrate on fine details with occasional interruption and remember multiple assignments. Must be able to communicate effectively with other employees.
    This position could include nights and weekends and will constitute approximately 15 hours per week. Schedule is flexible within Noah Webster Library hours and will be determined with the position supervisor.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    High School diploma and two (2) years of experience demonstrating practical knowledge of library functions, services, terminology, techniques, procedures, and standard tools or comparable experience, or Library Technical Assistant certificate and/or two (2) years of college.  Experience with copy cataloging required. Familiarity with Sierra ILS or Polaris is highly desirable.

    The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to participate in any portion of the selection process.  Candidates must achieve a passing score of seventy (70) on the oral examination in order to have their name placed on the Eligible List for this position.  An individual appointed to the position must satisfactorily complete a six (6) month probationary period.
