GENERAL SUMMARY 
 
Under general supervision, this position will assist with the day-to-day clerical responsibilities of the circulation desk and provide a range of services, such as reference, information, instruction, and basic computer assistance. The position will work on average 25-29 hours per week.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists patrons at circulation desk with book returns and checkouts, payment of fines, and completing Library card application and hold request forms.
  • Updates social media accounts monthly for upcoming events and consistent branding.
  • Organizes books into their Dewey number and re-shelve materials properly.
  • Assists with library tasks, programs, and special events.
  • Provides patrons with basic computer/printer assistance.  
  • Helps keep the library clean and organized.
  • Screens and handles routine correspondence, e-mails, and calls.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Ability in the following:
    1. To communicate clearly and effectively in English.
    2. Interact cordially with customers of different demographics.
  • Knowledge in the following: 
    1. Dewey Decimal Classification system.
    2. Library and city policies and procedures. 
  • Skills in the following:
  1. Strong internal and external communication.
  2. Basic computer/printer.
  3. Strong organization.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED with 2 years of related clerical experience.

PREFERENCES:
•              Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
•              Bilingual English/Spanish.
•              Previous library experience.
•              Knowledge of social media marketing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
•              Typical office environment with little or no exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.
•              Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, use hands, operate objects, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Ability to reach with hands and arms.
•              May be required to climb and balance. May occasionally carry, pull, push, or lift up to 25 pounds.
•              Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus, allowing a broad field of vision.
•              Physically able to operate a variety of computer and office equipment.
•              Must be comfortable with ambiguity.
