Job overview

The Medical Equipment Library (MEL) Assistant is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Medical Equipment Library service, working autonomously to carry out routine maintenance of medical equipment as well as collecting, decontaminating and delivering high priority medical devices to clinical areas, ensuring maximum utilisation of medical devices across the organisation. The post holder is required to work with clinical and technical staff from within the organisation, as well as external staff, to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of services in line with clinical requirements, ensuring high quality and positive outcomes are achieved for service users.

·Responsible for ongoing management of medical device loans and stock levels, ensuring that overdue loans are returned to the MEL in a timely manner to ensure devices are utilised effectively. This may include challenging clinical staff and having difficult conversations, where excellent interpersonal skills are essential.

· Day to day organisation of the MEL to ensure safe and effective standard of service is provided.

· Undertake device collections and deliveries for wards and clinical areas. Manage high pressure situations to supply key medical devices in a timely manner, whilst managing conflicting priorities of clinical staff.

· Remove medical devices from clinical use and liaise with Medical Engineering staff if failures occur and analysis shows remedial work is beyond the scope of the MEL Assistant.

· Liaise with Medical Engineering staff to ensure that planned maintenance is carried out as appropriate.

· Provision of excellent customer service to all staff who visit or contact the MEL.

· Responsible for carrying out routine maintenance of selected equipment.

· Monitor contamination status of devices returned from loan and take appropriate action when required, including escalation to management and/or Infection Control.

· Regular communication with clinical staff who request and return medical devices. Maintaining good working relationships is essential.

We provide a range of non- clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organisations. Our services include: estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA). 

In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· Contribute to the day to day running of the MEL, with an emphasis on continuous improvement of processes and development of the service.

· Monitor stock and initiate orders to ensure the timely and adequate procurement of devices, accessories and consumables to ensure effective operation of the MEL.

· Prioritise workload, scheduling activities, managing resources and coordinating activities to ensure effective operation of the MEL service.

· Work with a high degree of autonomy and act as a point of contact for users of the MEL service, managing its medical devices and all other MEL related concerns effectively.

· Liaise with clinical staff and other colleagues to prioritise and plan own workload, ensuring optimum efficiency in responding appropriately to urgent requests.

· You will be expected to carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in line in with your skills, knowledge and experience and the needs of the business.
