Job Description

 

Job Title: Media Specialist / Librarian

Reports To: Principal

Contracted Days: 195

 

Job Summary: The School Media Specialist (Librarian) promotes literacy and fosters a love of reading while managing the school’s library and media resources. This position supports both students and staff by providing access to information, integrating technology, and collaborating with teachers to enrich the curriculum through research, inquiry, and digital citizenship.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Curate, maintain, and circulate a diverse and engaging collection of print and digital resources aligned with curriculum standards and student interests.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive library environment that supports a reading culture and intellectual curiosity.
  • Teach research skills, media literacy, and responsible technology use, including copyright and digital citizenship.
  • Collaborate with teachers to plan and co-teach lessons that integrate information literacy, research, and technology into the curriculum.
  • Manage the library budget, inventory, and purchasing of books, periodicals, and digital resources.
  • Provide training and support for students and staff in the use of library technology, databases, and instructional tools.
  • Promote school-wide reading initiatives, author visits, book fairs, and other literacy events.
  • Maintain an organized, attractive, and student-centered library space.
  • Stay current with educational technology, trends in school libraries, and children’s/YA literature.
  • Uphold district policies and ensure compliance with copyright, intellectual freedom, and privacy laws.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Valid teaching license with a Library Media Specialist endorsement (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Studies, Educational Media, or related field (preferred)
  • Knowledge of instructional practices, literature for children and young adults, and educational technology
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
