JOB SUMMARY

Under direction of the Literacy Coordinator, the Literacy Associate performs a variety of moderately complex technical and paraprofessional duties in support of various sections/functions of Literacy Services.  This position will also promote Literacy and Educational Programs at community events and other opportunities.

Hours per Week: 30


NOTE:  This position is 100% dependent on funding from the CLLS ESL Grant, which is currently approved through June 30, 2026.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.  

  • Conduct learner orientations
  • Perform assessments for adult, Family, and ESL entering the Literacy program, tutor training, along with coaching
  • Provides excellent customer service
  • Write newsletter articles, document procedures
  • Maintain records with timely and accurate data entry
  • Assist opening and closing of the Literacy Learning Center
  • Perform phone and reception duties
  • Assist with Outreach to the community
  • Checks in and processes library materials as necessary
  • Provides information regarding programs, events, conference rooms, etc.
  • Shelves library materials
  • Addresses or escalates patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management
  • Work closely with Literacy Staff and Library Management o plan, implement and promote programming activities
  • Assist in preparation, or independently plan activities, such as storytelling or art projects
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population and assist supervisor with additional tasks, as needed
  • Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies)
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

  • H.S. Diploma or GED, Bachelor Degree preferred; experience in Literacy, Education, Social or Human Services, or a related field
  • Possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required
  • Ability to work a regular schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings, and weekends
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites and Zoom
  • Excellent customer service skills, both written and verbal, with emphasis on compassion, patience, and tact when working with individuals with diverse backgrounds
  • English/Spanish preferred
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrated focus on the program mission and goals
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings, and weekends

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 50 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials with a buddy system.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
