The City of Torrance is recruiting for a Library Technician (Part-Time) to be part of the Torrance Public Library Team!

The Department
The mission of the Community Services Department is to enrich the community through the provision of recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities for persons of all abilities. The Community Services Department takes pride in “Enriching the Community through People, Programs, and Partnerships.”  The Department is a diverse organization which consists of five Divisions that work collaboratively to meet the vision, mission, and goals of the department: Administrative Services, Cultural Services, Library Services, Parks Services, and Recreation Services.

The Division 
The Torrance Public Library serves the community through a network of welcoming neighborhood libraries that provide access to books, digital resources, technology, educational programming, and cultural enrichment opportunities for all ages. Our main library is centrally located in the Civic Center, and five branches are conveniently located within a five-mile radius of the main library. The Library Division has a circulation of over 1.2 million funded with a budget of $7.2 million and staffed with approximately 67 employees. The library system is committed to supporting lifelong learning, community engagement, literacy, and equitable access to information through innovative services, knowledgeable staff, and responsive public programs.

The Position
The Department is seeking multiple Library Technicians who are dependable, resourceful, and have a passion for providing excellent public service in a team-oriented library system. Under direction from assigned Library Supervisor or Management Staff, Library Technicians perform highly specialized library support work, using clerical, technology, and public service skills, which requires independent judgment and functional expertise in library operations. QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Bachelor's degree; OR
Associate's degree or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in a library environment; OR
Library Support Staff Certificate and two (2) years of experience in a library environment; OR
High School graduation and four (4) years of experience in a library environment.

Ideal Candidate
Successful candidates will possess the following:
  • A proven track record of delivering exceptional end-to-end customer service;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all ages from diverse socioeconomic, educational and cultural backgrounds;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience in effectively handling and completing multiple projects and shifting priorities;
  • Keen attention to detail;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and take initiative; and
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment, as well as the ability to work independently.
