The Library Technician position at Potomac Library is a vital public-facing role. This part-time role handles patron technology support, public computer troubleshooting, digital literacy instruction, and standard library service desk operations. You will be a vital part of the Potomac team that reintroduces the community to everything a dynamic and inclusive environment offers.

About This Role:

  • Customer & Patron Support: Provide high-quality, welcoming service to patrons and internal staff. Assist patrons with holds, item locations, public computers, the digital library, and standard office equipment.
  • Operations & Policy: Interpret and apply library policies and procedures. Resolve customer issues professionally.
  • Community Outreach & Programming: Prepare, facilitate, and assist with library programming. Create engaging displays, support branch outreach, and participate in community events.
  • Collection Maintenance: Carry out collection maintenance, organization, and shelving.
  • Team Collaboration & Development: Share skills, knowledge, and best practices with colleagues; actively participates in library meetings and training.

Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or G.E.D.


Preferences: 

  • 1 year of customer service experience in a public library, Bookstore, or Retail. Experience in resolving customer issues or complaints independently and informing customers of products and services.
  • Experience in instructing others in using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher), SharePoint, Integrated Library System (ILS), Smart Access Management (SAM), and email applications.
  • Experience troubleshooting standard office equipment, such as printers, fax machines, and copiers. 
  • Experience assisting patrons in the use of library technology.
  • Experience with planning and facilitating library programming and community outreach. 

Special Requirements (if applicable): 

The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on County business.


Work Schedule: 

This is a part-time, 20-hour-a-week position which includes days, evenings, and weekend hours. Scheduling flexibility is essential. Potomac staff are scheduled Monday through Wednesday, 9:00 am-8:00 pm. Thursday through Saturday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm.

The schedule includes days, at least one evening, and rotating weekends.


Hiring Salary Range: $21.14 - $32.17/hour
