Starting pay is likely $19.67 – $20.82 per hour depending on experience.
This position is part-time, between 10-20 hours per week.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under direction from the Whitefish Community Library Director, assists in implementing the activities and operations of the Whitefish Community Library, including providing basic assistance to patrons with checking and locating materials, programs and services in person or via phone or email. Serves as a first point of referral for material-handling issues. Must work with Whitefish Community Library management, City officials and employees, and the public with discretion and diplomacy.

Answerable to Whitefish Community Library Director, and, indirectly, the Whitefish Community Library Board of Trustees.

Job Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position serves an important role in the operations of the City and requires a consistent and dependable presence during assigned hours of work. It is expected that every employee should be on time, fully prepared, every day that the employee is scheduled to work.

Provides information on library services, policies and procedures to library users.
Assists library patrons in person, via telephone, and via email.
Assists library patrons in locating materials and properly using library computers and other equipment, including minor technical support.
Processes library card applications and issues library cards.
Prepares outgoing materials for shipments, and processes incoming materials for patron distribution.
Performs routine facility opening and closing procedures.
Prints and completes scheduled reports.
Updates library information in various electronic media and environments, as assigned by Library Director.
Operates cash register and processes occasional cash transactions.
Assists with the upkeep of the library, including sorting and shelving of materials, shelf-reading, and maintaining general orderliness.
Coordinates with volunteers under direction of Library Director, as assigned.
Accepts training assignments/projects to increase relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the library.
Other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
(A) High school diploma or GED, and
(B) One (1) year of experience in a library or customer service setting with considerable public contact, AND
(C) Desire to work with the public is essential; must be comfortable working with people of all ages, from children to senior citizens, both in groups and individually.
(D) Any equivalent combination of experience and training which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Basic familiarity with library environments, operations and procedures.
(B) Interpersonal skills to fulfill a variety of patron needs from books to community referrals in person, via phone and email, while maintaining confidentiality.
(C) Working knowledge of computers and internet resources, including MS Office Word, Excel, Outlook.
(D) Ability to learn specialized software used to provide books and services to the public. Experience with Sirsi/Dynix, Libby, or OCLC is a plus.
(E) Ability to navigate and assess reliability of resources on the internet.
(F) Basic cash handling procedures, basic math, and keyboarding.
(G) Able to work independently to complete assigned tasks, with minimum supervision.
(H) Able to process applications for library cards; notify patrons of overdue books, collect fines.
(I) demonstrate operation of photocopier, microfilm/microfiche reader, scanner, and cash register.
(J) Able to implement research techniques and cognitive reasoning.
(K) Able to shelve books, media, and other materials; create displays and seasonal decorations.
(L) Able to perform minor cleaning and outdoor maintenance and advises proper officials when cleaning, maintenance, and repair of facilities is required
(M) Learn and abide by Whitefish Community Library and City of Whitefish policies and procedures, and applicable state and local regulations.
(N) Communicate effectively and courteously both orally and in writing, with employees, patrons, and other community members.
(O) Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor(s), coworkers, library patrons and volunteers.
(P) Exercise good judgment, flexibility, and sensitivity when resolving work-related concerns and issues.
(Q) Work independently.
(R) Work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends.
(S) Perform clerical and library tasks effectively and according to established procedures, and with attention to detail.
(T) Physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid State of Montana Driver’s license or ability to obtain one within one month of employment.
