Job Description

This position is available due to the upcoming 2027 expansion of the number of hours that the City of South Milwaukee Library will be open!

SUMMARY:
This position provides collection maintenance services for the library. The Library Shelver is responsible for retrieving and shelving library materials, maintains materials in the library collection, and assists in other support tasks as assigned. This position works under the supervision of the Library Director and is classified as Temporary.


SHIFT/HOURS:

Monday 8:30-11:30

Wednesday 8:30-11:30

Rotating Friday/Saturday 8:30-12:30 Fri / 9:30-1:30 Sat


Work schedule is subject to the operational needs of the Library and may include nights and weekends.

Duties/Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Shelves library materials accurately according to the library’s classification systems. 
• Empties and sorts consortium deliveries and the book drop. 
• Straightens books on shelves to ensure uniformity and neatness in appearance.
• Reads shelves for accuracy and re-shelves misplaced items. 
• Locates and retrieves library materials for selected lists. 
• Shifts books and collections as needed during daily shelving or as part of reorganization projects. 
• Refers non-directional questions to appropriate staff members. 
• Assists with library program set-up and take-down. 
• Participates in staff meetings when required. 
• Performs other duties, as assigned. 
• Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance. 
• Occasional trash removal and light cleaning duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: 
No employment experience required.  
Completion of one (1) year of high school. 
Knowledge, skills and abilities: 
• Ability to sort materials in alpha, numeric and alphanumeric order. 
• Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing. 
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. 
• Ability to work independently. 
• Ability to perform tasks with strong attention to detail. 
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. 
• Ability to provide truthful and accurate written and verbal communications. 
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of library patron information. 
• Ability to utilize computer to check e-mail and participate in employee training.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Book trucks, photocopier, paper cutter, mobile devices, new technology as introduced and/or adopted.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, lift, twist, talk, and hear (normal range in office environment, corrected or uncorrected); use hands to finger, handle, grasp; reach with hands and arms; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; and push or pull up to 200 pounds. The employee must occasionally sit, crouch and crawl, kneel, and climb. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as a temporary position governed by the South Milwaukee Public Library Handbook for Temporary Employees.
