Summary Statement

The Boise Public Library is seeking two dependable and detail-oriented Library Pages to support daily library operations and help ensure materials are organized, accessible and ready for patrons. These long-term temporary, part-time positions work 19 hours per week and play an important role in sorting, shelving and maintaining library materials; checking in returns; processing courier deliveries; supporting holds and displays; and assisting patrons with basic directional and catalog questions.

We currently have two openings:  

  • Library! at Cole and Ustick - this schedule can be flexible 

  • Downtown Library! - schedule can be flexible and requires availability every third weekend.

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:

City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Essential Functions

Performs routine tasks and refers complex issues to higher-level staff. 

Sorts and shelves library materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Maintains proper order of materials through frequent shelf reading and straightening. Shifts books and other materials to avoid overcrowding of shelves. Notifies appropriate staff of damaged items and any other cataloguing issues. 

Retrieves and processes returned library materials from the book drop. Checks materials for completeness and damage, returns them to circulation or forwards them to the appropriate personnel for resolution as necessary. Sorts items for hold, transit or shelving. 

Provides information, directions or referrals to assist patrons. Guides patrons on access to the online catalog and self-checkout. Collects holds placed by patrons for pick-up or to be dispatched to other library locations. Refers patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth questions or reader’s advisory services. 

Performs proper library opening and closing procedures. Performs cleanup of library materials and public areas. Assists with the maintenance of library displays and ensuring all book displays are filled. 

Assists and participates in library programs and ensures safety precautions are maintained in the youth service areas. 

Reviews and analyzes library guidelines and procedures and completes mandatory development training and attends staff meetings.

Requirements

Additional Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Knowledge of:

  • Basic computer functions and use of mouse and keyboard
  • Library rules, policies, regulations and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Compare numbers and names quickly and accurately
  • Learn the Dewey Decimal Classification
  • Provide good customer service
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Relate to patrons with disabilities and children at their developmental level
  • Make independent judgements and suggestions on library efficiency
  • Use specific library software
  • Understand and comply with library rules, policies, regulations and procedures
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Six or more months of experience performing customer service to people of all ages and backgrounds and shelving duties in a public library or similar setting.

Knowledge of:; adult and children’s literature; library specific software.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and chemicals.
This position works: some weekends and will empty the bookdrop on holiday closures.
