Position Overview

*This position works only 16 hours per week*

The Cumberland County Library serves residents and surrounding communities by providing access to a wide variety of informational and recreational materials, along with innovative programs and services that enrich lives. As a Library Page, you will play an important role in maintaining the organization and accessibility of the library’s collection, ensuring materials are easy for customers to find and enjoy. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a welcoming public environment and takes pride in keeping things organized and running smoothly.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintains the orderly organization of the library collection to ensure materials are easily accessible to customers

  • Alphabetizes and numerically arranges materials on library carts prior to shelving

  • Shelves library materials accurately and performs routine shelf-reading to maintain proper order within the collection

  • Straightens shelves, tables, and seating areas to maintain an attractive and welcoming public space

  • Assists with filling and maintaining library displays and shifts materials as needed to prevent overcrowding

  • Supports circulation staff by checking in returned library materials in the circulation workroom

  • Pulls items from shelves to fulfill customer requests and helps clear “Missing” or “In Transit” item statuses when located

  • Answers incoming phone calls and transfers them to the appropriate staff member or department

  • Performs shelf checks for missing materials and assists with collecting items from the book drop for check-in

  • Assists with processing weeded materials, prepares hold wrappers and routing slips, and moves full courier boxes to the designated pickup area

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of 8th grade supplemented by sufficient education to provide some familiarity with a variety of library materials.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current resources and content available on the library website

  • Knowledge of library card registration requirements and basic circulation procedures

  • Knowledge of the operation of photocopiers, fax machines, change machines, self-checkout machines, and other public service equipment

  • Knowledge of public computer reservation systems and meeting room reservation software

  • Skill in using the online public catalog to locate and verify library materials

  • Skill in performing accurate numerical and alphabetical filing and shelving arrangements

  • Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks with attention to detail

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and library customers

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public

  • Ability to organize materials efficiently to support the accessibility and maintenance of the library collection

Conditions of Employment:

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
