The Position

The City of Mission Viejo seeks qualified candidates to serve as our next part-time Library Page to provide excellent customer service to library patrons. Candidates will assist with shelving and filing all library materials using different filing systems; collecting, sorting, organizing and filing any materials used in the library; and moving furniture and equipment as needed; assisting in the Passport Office with check-in procedures and taking photos; assisting with Library programs as needed.

There are two (2) vacancies to work at the Mission Viejo Library.  Position 1 schedule: Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Tuesday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Position 2 schedule: Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The schedule may change to cover absences of coworkers and for department programming needs. The actual work schedule will be based on the needs of the City for the particular work week.  The City of Mission Viejo Library is typically open to the public: Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  

Library Page I are considered at-will Hourly, Seasonal, and/or Temporary variable hour employees, and are not a part of the competitive service.  Incumbents will work a flexible schedule, with an average of 12 to 19 hours per week, with increased scheduling during peak workload periods, but less than 1,000 hours during the assignment through the fiscal year starting July 1st and ending June 30th. This is an FLSA non-exempt position and is entitled to overtime if an employee works more than forty (40) hours per week.

  4. Retrieve library materials from outdoor book drops.
  5. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of shelves.
  6. Check in library materials.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

IDEAL CANDIDATE 

  • Able to work a minimum of 12 to 19 hours per week which may include early morning, evenings, and weekends;
  • Knowledge of alphabetical and numeric filing system;
  • Knowledge of purpose and functions of the library;
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public and City staff;
  • Ability to interact and work with people from varying age groups and diverse backgrounds;
  • Learn, understand, and apply library policies and procedures; and
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communications skills.

SKILL IN

  • Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
  • Using tact, initiative, prudence and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines.

Experience and Training and License/Certificate

QUALIFICATIONS:

Equivalent to the completion of ninth (9th) grade and some experience, paid or unpaid, in a library setting is desirable.  Previous computer experience is desirable.  

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

Applicants must be 15 years of age or older.  Applicants under the age of 18, that are required to attend school, must provide a California Workers Permit.
