Statement of Duties

Performs manual clerical work in the library department.

Supervision

Incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Patron Services Supervisor and may receive work assignments from any higher-level staff employees. 

Job Environment

Work is generally performed under typical office conditions. 

Work is learned via on-the-job training. Clear and concise instructions are given. Work is evaluated in progress and upon completion. As the incumbent becomes familiar with assigned work, tasks can be performed independently.

Operates a computer and general office equipment.

Position seldom requires contact with the public, responding to inquiries in writing, orally and in person from library patrons. This position involves daily contact with department employees.

Has no access to confidential information.

Errors in administration could result in delays or loss of service.


Essential Functions

•Provides general assistance to library staff by performing a number of routine work responsibilities, essential for the smooth operation of the library.

•Shelves and sorts books and other library materials according to the Dewey Decimal or other library classification system, by alphabetical, chronological or subject order.

•Monitors and maintains shelves; maintains reading areas, library collections, and shelving and storage areas in a clean and orderly manner; shifts and rearranges materials as assigned.


•Assists library users in locating proper shelves and reading materials.

•At the request of library staff, may be directed to retrieve books, reading materials and audio-visual materials from one (1) library location and transfer to another location.

•Performs a variety of general clerical tasks.

•Performs messenger tasks.

•Lifts, carries, and places heavy objects, such as: large books at designated locations and discarding newspapers monthly.

•May assist in processing books and other materials, i.e. attaching labels, applying jackets, and mending; may assist in preparing promotional or directional posters and signs; may provide general assistance at library programs.

•Other duties as assigned.


Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

•An incumbent for this position needs not to be a high school graduate, but must be able to read, write and spell and demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.


Special Requirements

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

A candidate for this position should have working knowledge of:

•English grammar and spelling
•The library system for locating books, periodicals, reference and other reading materials

or have these skills:

•Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
•Ability to perform routine and repetitive work
•Ability to alphabetize and to put items in numerical order according to the library system
•Strong attention to detail
•Maintain harmonious relationships with department members and other city employees
•Communicate effectively, orally and in writing with employees and the public


Physical Requirements

•Position requires the ability to operate computer keyboard and standard office equipment. 
•Prolonged periods in a stationary position.
•Constantly move about inside the office to access equipment.
•Consistently position self to maintain office equipment and documents.
•Physical strength to move and push object up to 60lbs. 
•Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
•Ability to observe items at a close range.
•Ability to adjust focus at close and distant vision.
