Nature of Work

Performs library circulation and customer service tasks by shelving and organizing materials, processing returns, assisting patrons, and maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming library environment.

Environmental Factors 
Work is performed in a standard library environment. 

Physical Factors

Medium physical demands. Frequent lifting, carrying, and moving. Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and to push or pull loaded carts and bins of materials.  Work involves frequent reaching above shoulder level and below waist level to shelve or retrieve items. Frequent use of a personal computer. 

Work Situation Factors 
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues.   Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

This posting will be used to fill a full-time, 30 hour per week position and may be used to fill additional vacancies to include positions that are full-time, part-time, or contract.   

Full-time, regular, non-exempt position.

Position is graded at RN03

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains the condition of the library shelves; shelves all returned books and materials according to the library classification system; shelves books and library materials in designated areas; reads the library stacks to make sure they are in order by the author’s name for fiction area and by Dewey Decimal call number for non-fiction area; straightens books on the shelves, bringing all book spines to the edge of the shelf for easy retrieval; picks up loose books within the library, processes them for in-house use count, and re-shelves them using a book cart. 
  • Performs general clerical and administrative tasks for the operation of the library. 
  • Receives returned items, pushes carts to sorting area, effectively sorts items, and ensures correct placement on shelves. 
  • Uses and operates computer program to maintain lists of hold items; gathers hold items and finds misplaced items; organizes hold cart for patron use in the circulation office. 
  • Performs general custodial and clean up tasks to ensure library is safe, organized, and clean for use. 
  • Fills in at front desk and answers phones when needed; uses computer to place damaged items in repair bins. 
  • Answers general patron questions and directs individuals to information when needed. 

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to a High School Diploma. Previous customer service experience is desirable; experience working in a library environment is preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Knowledge of:  principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
