Summary Description

The City of Urbandale is currently accepting applications for Library Page. In this role, you will assist with a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Patron Experiences Library Specialist that support daily library operations and help maintain an organized and welcoming environment for visitors and staff. Responsibilities include shelving and organizing library materials, assisting staff with clerical and organizational tasks, helping maintain orderly library spaces, and providing general support to ensure services run smoothly.

This position is a year-round, part-time opportunity with increased hours during the summer months. Summer hours will average approximately 12 hours per week, while hours during the school year will typically be around 4–5 hours per week. Summer schedules may include weekdays, evenings, and weekends based on department needs. This position is an excellent opportunity for a high school student seeking flexible work experience while balancing school and other activities.

The URBANDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY houses a wide variety of print and non-print materials for research and entertainment. In addition to our extensive collection, the library serves as an important community resource by providing access to computers, photocopiers, meeting rooms, and study areas. Through a wide range of programs that inform, educate, and entertain audiences of all ages, the library welcomed approximately 208,000 visitors in 2025 and hosted nearly 700 programs attended by more than 20,000 participants.

Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Sorts and shelves all materials.
  • Maintains the correct order and neat appearance of the library's collection.   
  • Transports materials to assigned location.
  • Answers customers' directional questions and refers non-directional questions to appropriate staff.
  • Assists customers with locating materials.
  • Attends department meetings.
  • Performs additional duties and projects as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Previous experience working with the public preferred.
• Previous experience working in a library preferred.

Additional Requirements:
Must be able to successfully complete post-offer/pre-employment reference checks, drug screening, and background check.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professional telephone etiquette and call-handling abilities.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Solid mathematical ability, including working with fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Strong focus and ability to maintain concentration in a diverse and fast-paced work environment.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong accuracy and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with PCs and common computer software and applications.
  • Skilled in searching and navigating databases to locate and retrieve information.
  • Ability to perform essential duties at designated work site location at designated hours.
