Summary

This part-time position is responsible for re-shelving and organizing magazines and newspapers returned to and used in the library; searching newspaper microfilm to fulfill patron obituary requests; processing weekend newspapers; re-shelving books in the reference area; keeping shelves and public tables neat; interacting with library patrons and staff in a courteous, professional manner (including referring patrons to the Reference Desk); and helping with special projects as needed.

The person filling this description must be able to put materials in order alphabetically and numerically using decimal numbers; have a strong eye for detail; have basic computer skills; be able to accurately record and communicate their work to other staff members; and interact professionally with staff and the general public.

Position Type: Part-Time/Non-Exempt

Shift: Saturday morning preferred; Hours can vary

Weekly Hours: 5

Criminal background check is required.

State Child Abuse Clearance is required.

All employees of the Chester County Library are considered a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse under the Child Protective Services Law (Title 23 Pa. C.S.A. Chapter 63).

Essential Duties

Essential duties, tasks and accountabilities will vary by library unit and may include the following:

  • Processing newspapers, magazines, and special subscriptions.
  • Use computer software and physical labels and stamps to process serials.
  • Perform annual weeding project, including removing, organizing, and tracking work related to project.
  • Shelve library materials (newspapers, magazines, special subscriptions) in proper order. 
  • Perform shelf reading to ensure materials are in proper order.
  • Search library for misplaced books, materials, and equipment and return materials and equipment to proper location.
  • Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.

Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • High School education (often in progress). 
  • Eligible to work in PA. 
  • Must be able to courteously refer clients to the appropriate service desk.
  • Must be able to file materials within the appropriate classification scheme.
  • Ability to learn Dewey Decimal system and other library filing systems. 
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. 
  • Ability to compare numerical material for accuracy.
  • Ability to develop a working knowledge about the organization, and care of library materials, services and programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally, in writing or by listening).
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English in order to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to read with comprehension.
  • Knowledge of filing procedures, including cross-file indexing.
  • PA criminal background check.
  • PA child abuse clearance.
  • FBI fingerprint-based criminal background check.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
  • Completed coursework from an accredited college or university in library science or another job-related field.  
  • Experience working in a library with computerized systems. 
  • Knowledge of Chester County Library policies, procedures, services and programs. 

Additional Information

Relevant background checks, clearances, physicals, drug tests, and any other assessments or evaluations will be conducted after an offer of employment is given per County policy.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have:

  • Basic to Intermediate Office Suite Skills, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Explorer)
  • Basic OutLook skills (Email and Calendar)
  • Proficiency with Library’s online catalog
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk; stand; bend, twist or rotate at the waist while working; kneel, stoop, crouch or squat; and talk or hear.  Occasionally, the employee will need to climb stairs; climb or work on ladders; and lift, push and carry items. 
The specific vision requirements for this position are as follows:
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
Work Environment:
  • The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate.
Other:
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends on rotation, as necessary.
  • Library is open seven days a week (total of 65 hours).
